The document discusses the author's investigation into the evolution of color in still life photography from the 1950s to 2010. The author will analyze photographs from each decade and compare how the use of color has changed, looking at different still life types and how color affects viewers. Still life photography allows more compositional control than genres like landscape and portraiture. Color has become a crucial part of images and influences their power and feeling. The author hopes to analyze the effectiveness of specific colors and how still life has become influential in today's society through color.

1. The evolution of colour within
still life photography
I want to look into an investigate the influence that social media sites such
as twitter, facebook and formspring influence society while particularly
looking at the younger people.
2. Introduction:
In this unit I have been given an overall theme, which is colour, within this theme I have decided to look at and analyse the evolution of
colour within still life photography from the 1950’s to 2010. I will be looking at and analysing photographs from every decade and
comparing them to the precious one to see how still life has evolved over the past 60 years focusing on the changes in use of colour. I
will be looking into the different types of still life within the photographic image as well as investigating how different colours have a
different effect depending on their viewer.
Like landscape or portraiture, still life is one of the great traditional art forms. The term still life derived from the Dutch term still even
and is generally the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. Still life more so than other types
of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more control in the composition, lighting and atmosphere of
the image. Still life within the photographic image can be open to interpretation as each individual can view it differently and relate the
subject matter back to something personal that has meaning in the individual’s life. A still life photographer makes pictures rather than
takes them.
Still Life, as with so much of photography, has its roots firmly embedded in the romanticism of traditional painting techniques. Still life
usually seeks to illustrate the natural world and to present something more than a simple record of the scene. When a painter works,
the resulting picture will reflect what has been in the artist's mind - predilections, frustrations, enjoyments and moods etc. This applies
to the photographer as artist too - so our pictures represent something within us, making them each unique.
The subjects for still-life pictures are often simple and commonplace. The familiar can be rendered special and significant by the
treatment that it's given. Just as trivial words can provide the source for a beautiful song so trivial objects can be arranged to form a
beautiful picture.
Throughout my investigation I hope to look into the effectiveness of colour to an image and how it has become such a crucial part of a
picture, going through and analysing the different types of still life that have made it such a powerful media in today’s society. Im going
to look into the power that each specific colour has and the feel that it specifically brings to the image.
3. Potential photographers
and why
Aura Rosenberg- I found her work interesting due to the literal meaning s
that are shown within it, I like the way his whole life and personality is
categorised into a summary on his face, the idea that all of his skills and
passions can be squeezed into such a small space, this can relate back
to my investigation as on social media sites everyone has a profile and
all ask similar questions to those on his face.
4. Potential photographers
and why
Andrew Curtis- since I'm looking into the theme of social media I
thought this image would be appropriate as it shows exactly and
accurately the results of social media networks has had on young
people today, I have seen first had how people become attached
to there phone so much to the point they become un-sociable in
person so that they can socialise on the internet. I think this is a
powerful image as it shows clearly that she is in the company of
other people however she still almost looks hypnitised.
5. Potential photographers
and why
John Stezaker-this picture intrigued me as although it is not immediately
to do with social media networks or still life it shows how someone can
have a split personality, this is something that occurs with young people
today on social media networks. I have seen a number of cases where
someone appears completely different on a social media site such as
instagram due to them editing the picture by adding a filter to it or by
creating an illusion in it. I want to look into why younger people feel the
need to do any of this and what has caused them to think this way. I
think his work can help me portray this well.
