French Impressionism began in the mid-19th century as artists moved from traditional styles to looser brushstrokes and brighter colors. This new style originated in France but spread throughout Europe. It was named for Claude Monet's painting "Impression, Sunrise," which was widely criticized but inspired Monet to continue developing the style. Monet and other artists like Camille Pissarro and Frederic Bazille formed an anonymous society to paint in this style, capturing fleeting moments and individual perspectives. Their vivid, unconventional works helped establish Impressionism as a new era of art.
