Alan Cate currently teaches history for the University School in Hunting Valley,
Ohio. At this preparatory school for boys in kindergarten through 12th grade,
Colonel Cate teaches Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History as well as a
variety of other secondary-level courses.

Overall, the AP U.S. History course helps students to develop a comprehensive
understanding of U.S. history through analysis of primary sources. The course
focuses on all areas of the country's development and operations. Elements of
study include economic development, political change, international
relations, and the national identity.

The unique nature of the AP U.S. History course lies largely with its focus on
analysis. Students examine and interpret available evidence in light of its
relevance to the issue, importance in historical context, and relationship with
existing scholarly work. Designed to reflect a first-year college-level class in
content and format, the AP U.S. History course culminates in a three-hour
exam that includes both multiple choice and free response. Exams are graded
on a five-point scale, with five the highest possible score.
