An introductory course for Whittier College History majors that considers the history of different
regions of the globe, including East Asia, Europe and the Americas. Course centered around the
contingent nature of today’s world. The course focused on how the ebb and flow of history and
national development was not set in stone, but dependent on certain historical “ accidents” or
“conjunctures “of historical developments.
HIST 323: Modern China, 3 units. Grade received: A
An upper division course for Whittier College history majors pursuing an East Asian History
emphasis. Course analyzes the development of the modern Chinese state, and follows the period
from 1644 to the present day (the Qing Dynasty to the early 21st
century).
HIST 321: China: Its Environment and History, 3 units. Grade received: A
A course in environmental history. Class discussions pertain to the historical relationship
between the spread of Chinese civilization and its impact on the environment.
PLSC 220: International Relations, 3 units. Grade received: A-
A course regarding the history of International Relations. Class discussions pertained to
the history of foreign policy formation through the examination and analysis of the
importance of understanding history in the discussion of International Relations.
PLSC 332:American Foreign Policy, 3 units. Grade received: A
Upper division Political Science course regarding the historical origins of American
foreign policy and its formation. Course traced the history of American Foreign Policy
orientations, specifically isolationism, unilateralism, imperialism and engagement. Great
emphasis placed on understanding current events and analyzing American foreign policy
trends as they pertain to global events.

2. conduct their first independent historical research. Course lectures involved discussions on the
proper usage and definition of primary, secondary and tertiary historical materials. Students
produce and present to peers an independent historical research paper regarding a specific
historical theme or topic.
CHIN 350: Chinese Cinema, 3 units. Grade received: A
This course introduces three major traditions of Chinese cinema (Mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan)
from the age of silent films to the present. Films were used as mediums to discuss and analyze
related social, political and cultural issues.
Relevant Work Experience
Chinese Language Tutor, Whittier College Department of Modern Languages and
Literatures, (Fall 2011- Spring 2012, Fall 2014-Spring 2015).
As a Chinese Language Tutor for the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, I assist
students to prepare for exams, advise on what constitutes proper completion of graded
assignments and grade quizzes and homework.
Student Employee, Wardman Library –Whittier College, (Spring 2014).
My primary duties include cataloging and organizing books, assisting patrons to navigate the
library, answering phone calls at the main circulation desk and online researching.
History Teaching Assistant, (Preceptor), ( Fall 2013).
I served as a teaching assistant while enrolled in a History Preceptorship class (graded based on
credit/ no credit) to a course titled Introduction to Modern European History. In this capacity, I
guided class discussions, answered student questions regarding upcoming test and proposed
revisions to course syllabi.
Grant Assistant for Professor of East Asian History and Environmental History- Henry
Luce Initiative, (Fall 2013).
As a student assistant for my undergraduate college’s Professor of East Asian History, I read and
produced an English language summary of documents pertaining to promoting environmental
sustainability in a rural Chinese village. Other duties included assisting with the translation of
Chinese language correspondence between the Professor and a Chinese University history student
who wanted to obtain a copy of one of said Professor’s published books.
Intern, Whittier College Summer Chinese Language and Culture Academy, (Summer
2013).
I instructed children aged 9-12 years and adults aged 18-70 years in Chinese language and
culture. I was also required to conduct Chinese to English/ English to Chinese language
translation on behalf of teachers invited from China to teach at the Academy. I acquired valuable
leadership and problem solving skills from this internship experience.
Intern, National Atomic Testing Museum, (Summer 2012).
As an Intern at the National Atomic Testing museum (an affiliated museum with the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington D.C.) I utilized my Chinese language skills to create a Chinese language
version (both in simplified and traditional characters) of the museum's public information guides.
Further, I was also tasked by the museum curator to create and conduct research for a museum

3. exhibit of my own design, which I completed successfully while also creating corresponding
public information brochures.
