Hydrocephalus is a condition where there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles or cavities of the brain. This excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain. The excess fluid is usually caused by an abnormality which obstructs the normal flow and absorption of CSF. Common symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision due to optic nerve compression and in severe cases decreased consciousness. The condition is usually treated by surgically inserting a shunt to drain the excess fluid from the brain to another part of the body like the abdomen.
