Anemia, respiratory issues, and cardiac problems can cause dyspnea in patients with chronic liver disease. Respiratory causes include pleural effusions, ascites causing pulmonary compression, and hepatopulmonary syndrome. Cardiac issues may arise from alcohol-induced cardiomyopathy. Two additional conditions are platypnea, where dyspnea worsens when sitting up due to issues like hepatopulmonary syndrome or atrial defects, and orthodeoxia, which is postural hypoxia relieved by lying down.
