Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21. It is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability and developmental delays. People with Down syndrome may experience physical growth delays, mild to moderate intellectual disability, characteristic facial features and low muscle tone in infancy.
