3. TIS Candidate Requirements
Must have a valid teaching certificate
Must have 2 years experience in classroom
Must have approval from principal
Must have county superintendent approval
Must complete 320 hours or 40 days of professional development approved by WVDE.
Online collaborative sessions during May and June of the cohort year;
A two-day conference in Beckley in June;
A five-day conference in Morgantown (State Technology Conference) in July;
Participation in online courses; Face-to-face workshops; and
Other professional development opportunities related to topics such as project-based learning, specific
technology tools, online content resources, data analysis for instructional decision-making, and
instructional technology integration issues.

4. ISTE – ISTE.org
What is ISTE?
ISTE, The International Society for Technology in Education, is dedicated to the
improvement of teaching and learning through the effective integration of
technology in education.
What are NETS?
NETS, National Education Technology Standards, are a set of benchmarks that help to measure
competence for the integration of technology in education. NETS are not subject content
specific but address the skills students need for the digital literacy required for success in the
21st century
Adopted by CAEP formerly NCATE, accredited college use the ISTE
standards for teaching technology courses.
WV State department of Education has modified the ISTE-Nets or used
them as a guide to help develop academic standards or curriculum.
ISTE and Common Core
The ISTE Standards and Common Core share an emphasis on using technology — not
for technology’s sake, but as a tool for to focus energies on research and media
literacy, creativity, collaboration, problem solving, and critical thinking.

Use of technology in classrooms is different in all counties.
Counties choose how to distribute the technology funds to schools.
Each school than decides how to spend their funds.
Some divide up per teacher
Some use amounts for supplies for the school first and then divide up.
Grants are another way to receive extra funds for technology
Some schools have written grants for iPad carts.
Some have received grants for new programs state departments are implementing
and to receive computers.
