Vietnamese culture places importance on respect and courtesy through non-verbal communication. When greeting others, it is customary to put one's hands at their sides or stomach and say "chào" while bowing the head. Shoes are also traditionally removed inside homes out of respect. Verbally, Vietnamese-Americans may be late to social gatherings to avoid attention, but gather regularly to enjoy food from pho restaurants and boba shops while catching up.
