1. The opening of โAlienโ begins in almost complete darkness, and in almost complete silence. Suggesting that the entire
film will follow similar trends, it almost succeeds in convincing the viewer of the genre without even establishing any
characters or plot. The camera also appears to float through space with no specific destination which also shares a
similarity with the letters on screen, these letters slowly reveal themselves as the camera travels. The reveal of the name
of the movie is concealed for quite a long time as the letters appear in a completely non linear fashion, this peculiar way
in which the title is revealed could have connotations with mystery, an idea which is shared with the alien in the film
which takes a reasonable amount of time to reveal itself but is also never fully explained. All of the letters within the title
begin revealing themselves from the middle outwards, which is exactly how the alien appears. By bursting out of the
human chest. The theme of mystery is prevalent in a large number of different horror movies, but with the sci-fi
elements present in alien a greater sense of mystery can be introduced by using the vastness of space. This is shown in
this title sequence as the title wanders in a seemingly infinite space, with only what what we assume to be the location of
the entire film. The names of those who worked on the film are also written in an extraordinarily plain font, a technique
which furthers the mystery present within the title itself as the seemingly meaningless symbols are combined to form
โAlienโ.
2. The opening of โThe Thingโ begins instantly begins by throwing the viewer into a pool of complete mystery, with disembodied
forms showing themselves in darkness throughout the sequence. The names of the people involved with the film are also shown to
be almost sticky as they break apart from each other and join up again , almost like some sort of micro organism as it reproduces.
Which is almost like the premise of the entire movie as it details the exploits of an alien which can change its appearance to match
that of other living things. The letters in the names are also extremely disjointed, much like the alien which only shows its true form
at one moment in the film and its appearance is quite similar to the way the letters join together; through thin strands of flesh. The
whole sequence is also quite dark and all of the objects on screen are obscured and mysterious, an ideal which is present in the
entire movie. Of course the sequence also shows images which would appear to be blood or some sort of substance, which further
adds to the horror element of the film. The sequence also has an extremely limited use of sound, which could suggest loneliness
within the film or could also relate to the setting of the film which is a frozen wasteland, somewhere that wouldnโt present many
opportunities for sound. Many of the images present in the opening appear to be quite insect like, which could possibly be a hint as
to the origin of the creature.
3. The opening of โHalloweenโ begins with just a pumpkin lit up against a pitch black background. Pumpkins automatically have
connotations with horror, as of course they are shown at Halloween as a type of decoration. As the shot closes in on the pumpkin the
light appears flicker suggesting the situation within the film will change frequently. The pumpkins face appears to be crafted in a smiling
position, which is of course ironic considering the nature of the movie as a whole. There is also a cut above the mouth of the
pumpkin, suggesting injuries within the film itself; possibly focusing on the face. The sequence is also shown as being very blank and
dark, suggesting the entire film is simply โwhat you see is what you getโ. This is typical of the genre as the majority of teen horror movies
are very straight forward without any kind of surprise or substance. The pumpkin is also in a laughing pose, showing that the horror
could possibly be quite โtongue in cheekโ or possibly that the pumpkin is silently mocking the entire situation. The sound of the title
sequence is very quiet, suggesting that the film will shock the audience with loud noises later in the narrative.
