Are You Afraid of the Dark?

  1. 1. Are You Afraid of the Dark?
  2. 2. This shot is the first shot of the sequence. The use of the dark blue sets the scene of a “midnight theme”. An empty boat left in the middle of nowhere emphasises there is no one around .The fog blurs out the background creating a sense of mystery .
  3. 3. A child's playground is a common scene used in horror movies. An empty child's play area is a place known to be dangerous and a place of “kidnap”.
  4. 4. The upwards angle of this door creates a sense of tension as there is a slow camera movement towards the keyhole of the door. The audience is kept is suspense as they await to see what is behind the door.
  5. 5. The chair in the distance is a common object used in horror films as they can “rock by themselves “.Audiences have learnt to fear this object in horror films. This looks like a loft or basement. This is another common setting used in horror films as this room is normally filled with old belongings then left and never used.Aything can be lurking around.
  6. 6. A fan is used as a background noise .As the noise of a fan is generally loud, other things noises may be lost therefore unexpected things can happen without the audience knowing.
  7. 7. A clown is a common convention as from a young age children learn to fear clowns therefore ,may develop this fear into adulthood. The clown may be used in various ways .The clown popping up or following you in the dark creates fear as they are not very nice looking ,they may speak and are generally creepy.
  8. 8. A matchstick has been lit to suggest the person is afraid of the dark.
  9. 9. The title of the movie is then brought in behind the matchstick to bring the theme of the film together and to help the audience have a general idea of what the movie is going to be about.
  10. 10. The title then changes to blue .This gives the “midnight feel” once again as a dark background is used .The smoke can also be seen as clouds .
