This document summarizes two internships the author completed in the past year. The first internship was a 7-month position at REP Interactive in Los Angeles where the author wrote blog posts, interviewed people, assisted with video editing, and maintained client databases. The internship helped improve the author's writing, blogging, and interviewing skills. The second internship lasted two weeks assisting with media operations at the Farnborough Air Show. Duties included distributing press releases, maintaining websites and apps, and managing social media. This fast-paced internship helped enhance the author's journalism skills through interacting with media members. Both internships provided valuable experiences, but the author notes things they would do differently if given another

2. REP INTERACTIVE , LOS ANGELES…
SEPTEMBER 2015-MAY 2016
This was a 7 month position, which really allowed me to grow within the
company. I started there with no intent of staying this long however I loved
the company and they loved me.
I would go in twice a week, my main responsibility was writing blog posts
for the company. Each week I would be given different tasks in addition to
this such as:
Interviewing and writing up stories
Reviewing scripts
Sitting in with the video editors while they put footage together
Maintaining the client database and emailing potential new clients.
Vlogging, on camera work with the other intern

3. This role tied in very well with the classes I was taking in California,
because I did a lot of broadcast work.
I worked a lot on my on camera and reporting skills, since this was a
video and broadcast company it helped enhance these skills further,
and I became really proficient in premier pro.
I never thought I wanted to go into broadcast journalism but after
working here and taking those classes I think I would enjoy it a lot. I
love film and editing and I think I am good at it.

8. It helped me improve my writing and use of online platforms as I was
blogging for them- and now I have gone on to blog for different companies
since, including a fitness brand and a charity. I also have my own blog and I
started this after I began blogging for REP. I also improved my interviewing
skills as I had to perform an interview and then write up a story based on
this.

9. WHAT SURPRISED ME…
I expected the environment to be more fast paced and crazy,
but everyone was very relaxed and I sometimes found myself
bored or working on other projects.
In retrospect I should have taken the opportunity when I didn’t
have work to do to learn more about the company or sit in
during projects and watch others work and what they were
doing.
If I could re do this experience I would have submerged myself
into the company more. By this I mean I would have taken
more responsibility on, so they really felt they needed me when
I left as oppose to just enjoying having me around.

11. MEDIA ASSISTANT AT
FARNBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL
This was a two week placement where I was based in the media
centre at the Farnborough air show.
Duties included:
Gathering press releases and making sure they got to the relevant
people.
Helping to design and maintain the entire website and app
I was in charge of the social media leading up to the event and
during, which was quite an important role as many rely on social
media and their primary way to contact us and keep up to date on the
event.
We had a room for the BBC, Wallstreet journal and Bloomberg, we had
to keep them happy and ensure everything was in place for them.

12. This position was very different to my previous internship. It was an
incredibly fast paced atmosphere and I was constantly overwhelmed
with work. We were planning and organizing a huge event.
My journalism skills have been enhanced as I had a lot of practice
speaking to strangers and important members of the media.
My writing skills were improved through the content I had to put on
the website and social media accounts- and I was trained in the use
of CMS database and creating an app.

13. If I had the chance to do this again I would try to delegate tasks
better. At times I felt so swamped by work and ended up
forgetting important things
I would also not be ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help
when I needed it.
I would have used to opportunity I had being surrounded by so
much press to sell myself more and try to get myself more
work/ contacts.
