3
The aim of our presentation is to let you inform about the
Greenhouse effect, global warming and climate change which
are the burning questions in recent time and the objective is the
possible solutions that means how we can make our
environment sustainable.
4
The terms “Greenhouse Effect”, “Climate Change”, and “Global
Warming” are often used interchangeably, yet they really refer to
three separate processes. In this section, we‟ll examine all three
and evaluates whether the earth‟s atmosphere is getting warmer.
The threat of global climate change has produced one of today‟s
most intractable policy issues. This is because the emissions of
gases with our everyday lifestyle. Global average surface
temperature has increased over 20th century by about 0.60C;
globally, it is very likely that the 1990s was the warmest decade
and 1998 the warmest year in the instrumental record since 1861.
5
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
The greenhouse effect is natural phenomenon. Approximately
70% of the sunlight failing on earth is absorbed and re-radiated
as longer length, infrared energy (i.e. heat). Water vapor and
atmospheric gases, including trace gases such as carbon
dioxide (CO2), absorb some of the outgoing infrared radiation,
warming the air. This „greenhouse effect‟ raises the
temperature of earth to an average of around 150C. However,
with the burning of fossil fuels since the industrial revolution,
the atmospheric concentration of these greenhouse gases has
increased. This alters the radiation balance so that longer wave
radiation is being observed in the lower atmosphere and some
of this is being re-emitted back to the earth‟s surface. This is
known as the‟ Greenhouse Effect.‟
6
Figure: Atmospheric radiation 7
GLOBAL WARMING
Slowly, the ability of the earth‟s atmosphere to absorb heat
from the surface has increased and, with it, the temperature of
the atmosphere. This is known as global warming. Global
warming is caused by an increase in the greenhouse effect. The
greenhouse effect is not a bad thing by itself -- it's what allows
Earth to stay warm enough for life to survive.
8

9
CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change is also known to refer to the significant
changes in measures of climate. The changes pertain to the
issue of temperature, precipitation, or wind. Both of the things
have a lasting effect on the nature. As for the climate change,
this usually results from the counter play of many natural
factors.
.
10
11
In crease in the amount of greenhouse gasses in the
atmosphere attributed mainly to human activity. There some
causes of greenhouse effect:
Burning fossil fuels
Cutting down trees
Burning forest
Factories pollution
Coal
Oil
Natural Gases
Rising Sea levels
12
Fig. 2: Yearly CO2 Observations (IPCC)
13
Global warming is a result of increasing temperature of earth's
atmosphere due to several factors that can be natural or man
made. Whatever may be the factors the effect of global
warming is not in favor of mankind and hence need to be
controlled.
The main reason behind global warming is the increase in the
concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to
green house effect.
Another important reason for global warming is large amounts
of carbon dioxide produced from burning of fossil fuels for the
different purposes especially for power generation in various
power plants.
14
Methane is another green house gas that results in global
warming to a large extent.
Another major cause of global warming is continuous cutting
of a large number of trees across the world that is also referred
as deforestation.
Increasing population is another cause of global warming that
cannot be neglected.
15
Human Causes
Increase green house gasses(emulsion from burning fossils
fuels-oil, coal etc)
Pollution, smog from factories.
Deforestation
Increasing Population (More people more CO2)
16
Natural Causes
The arctic tundra and wetlands release methane, a greenhouse
gas
Earth naturally has a cycle of climate change that occurs every
40,000 years
The sun‟s solar energy output is changing and naturally increases
Earth average temperature by about 1‟C every century
Earth‟s orbit and tilt alter in relation to the sun, which changes
solar energy output.
17
Rising concentration of greenhouse gases generally produce an
increase in the average temperature of the Earth
Rising temperature may , in turn , produce changes in weather,
sea levels and land use patterns, commonly referred to as
“climate Change”
18
An average increase in temperature and during the last century
Melting of polar ice-polar bears and others animals are
drowning
Migrating birds are forced to change their time and place of
migration
Melting of glaciers will lead to higher sea level, which will
cause floods and put many low elevation regions at risk of
disappearing under water
Longer summers can disrupt animal habitation
19
New and widespread diseases because of warm climate
Damaged crops due to sudden climate change and floods
Average Precipitation increase around the world
More wildfires
Droughts, heat waves, extreme winter and storms, hurricanes,
typhoons
20
21
Personal choices matter
calculate your carbon foot print
reduce it relatively and tell the stories
Practice choices matter
“Green” your office and institution
Educate and innovate
Political choices matter
Make change locally
Educate decision makers
Participate fully in the local political process
22
Replace biomass with clean renewable energy and develop
“smart” local electrical grids
Reduces emissions and prevents new emissions, prevents
cardiopulmonary diseases and death, gets necessary energy to
households
Improve public transport, create bike lanes
Reduces need for personal vehicle, decreases congestion,
noise, and air pollution, promotes active transport
Promote solar hot-water and water conservation
Reduces air pollution, promotes health, saves money
23
Low NOX burners should be planted.
Low CO2 Emission engine and production plant should be
introduced.
Pre-combustion control and Post-combustion control
should be maintained in automobile design and industrial
machineries.( SO2 removal)
Waste water treatment plant.
Using ecological insulation materials for cooling.
Dumping or recycling the solid waste of energy producing
plant.

The IPCC Third Assessment Report on the Scientific Basis of
Climate Change provides a comprehensive and up-to-date
overview of what is currently known, and not known, about
the science of climate change and what needs to be done to
increase understanding in the present areas of uncertainty.
While concluding that „…most of the observed warming over
the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in
greenhouse gas concentrations‟ and indicating that, for the full
angel of plausible non-intervention emission scenarios
considered, „global average temperatures and sea levels are
expected to rise‟ throughout the twenty-first century and
beyond, the Report also draws attention to many gaps in
information and many uncertainties remaining in the
underlying science.
