Catalonia has over 15 years of experience with microcluster reinforcement initiatives focusing on specific industries. However, these initiatives were often too small in scope and lacked tangible results. The approach has shifted towards larger, cross-sectoral initiatives led by private companies rather than government agencies. Three examples are provided: 1) The Kids Cluster bringing together 195 companies across 16 sectors, 2) The Wellness Industry Cluster comprising over 300 companies, and 3) The Green Car Cluster working to modernize the automotive industry for electric vehicles. The new approach focuses on initiatives that are strategic, client-oriented, involve private leadership, and have professional management.
