5. Primary Education:
Plymouth
• Only 61% of pupils in Plymouth schools achieved a level 4+ in
both English and Mathematics, placing Plymouth primary
schools among the 10 worst performing areas in the country.
• As separate subjects, performance in both English and Maths
at level 4+ fell below the national average.
• The number of Reception places in Plymouth primary schools
needs to significantly increase. Predictions show a need for
144 additional places by 2013, and 200 more by 2015.

10. What we did...
• Spoke to the community to gauge demand, canvass opinion, generate
ideas and inform progress.
• Set up a website - FAQs, feedback, questionnaire
• Told the local media (newspaper, TV and radio)
• Made use of social media - Facebook, Twitter & Pinterest
• Stood in supermarkets
• Visited community centres
• Held community events
• Distributed 20,000 trifold questionnaire leaflets to all stakeholders
(targeted)

primary school run by Marine Academy Plymouth
• Reception aged children not enough
• Media supported us
• Concerns about Free Schools - what are they?
• Other groups have since followed our lead
