This study aims to screen individuals aged 8-45 with Type 1 Diabetes for over a year for Celiac Disease using a blood test. Celiac Disease causes intestinal inflammation from gluten and often goes unrecognized without symptoms. Individuals with Type 1 Diabetes have a higher risk. If the blood test is positive, participants will be referred to a gastroenterologist for potential endoscopy to confirm diagnosis. The goal is to identify more cases of Celiac Disease and study effects of diet on those without symptoms. Risks and benefits will be outlined in the informed consent document.

2. What is the purpose of this research study?
We are interested in screening individuals for Celiac Disease
Criteria:
• 8 to 45 years of age
• With Type 1 Diabetes for more than one year
Screening involves a blood test for Celiac Disease
Celiac Disease is often unrecognized as many people do not have
common signs or symptoms
Patient are usually screened only if they have symptoms of Celiac
Disease

3. What is Celiac Disease?
Celiac Disease is a medical condition which results in
inflammation or irritation to the intestine when you eat food
that contains a protein called gluten.
What Foods Contain Gluten?
Gluten is found in foods that contain wheat, rye, and barley,
which are often used to make breads, pasta, cereal, and cookies

4. Why are we doing this screening study?
We are interested in screening patients with Type 1 Diabetes for Celiac
Disease.
Individuals with Type 1 Diabetes have an increased risk to develop Celiac
Disease. (Risk is about 5% to 7% in Diabetes population)
In many cases individuals may not have symptoms
Symptoms can include:
• abdominal pain
• diarrhea
• anemia
• poor growth
If you do not have symptoms, without a blood screening test, you or your
doctor would not be aware that you have celiac disease

5. What will happen as a part of the
screening phase if this study?
We will ask that you provide a blood sample looking for evidence
of Celiac Disease. This blood sample is similar to testing that may
have been done during a clinic visit.
If the test is negative, no further action is required. If the test is
positive, we will let you know and the put you in contact with a
Gastroenterologist.
• A Gastroenterologist is a physician who is specialized in
disorders of the intestine and digestive system.

6. What will the next step be if the blood
test is positive?
If the test is positive, we will let you know and the put you in
contact with a Gastroenterologist.
You will likely be asked to have an endoscopy. A camera is used
to see the lining of your digestive tract, and a small sample will
be removed for analysis. This is currently the only way to
absolutely confirm a positive diagnosis of Celiac Disease.
If the diagnosis of Celiac Disease is confirmed, you may be
eligible to take part in the next phase of this research, which will
study the effect of diet in individuals with Celiac Disease who do
not have symptoms.

Any research study may offer benefits and risks to each
participant.
