• A consumer is a person who purchases goods and services for personal
use.
• Consumer rights state that a consumer has the legal right to examine
goods that he or she wants to buy.
• They can also punish those who indulge in malpractices and exploit them

5. 1. RIGHT TO SAFETY
• Producers need to strictly follow the required safety rules and
regulations.
• Consumers have the right to be protected against
the marketing of goods and delivery of services that are hazardous to life
and property.

6. 2. RIGHT TO BE INFORMED • Consumers have the right to be informed about
the particulars of goods and services that they purchase.
• For example, one can protest and complain if someone sells a good at
more than the printed price on the packet. This is indicated by ‘MRP’ —
maximum retail price.
• Certain information about the goods and services such as ingredients
used ,price,batch number, date of manufacture, expiry date and the
address of the manufacturer should be mention on the packing
7. 3. RIGHT TO CHOOSE • Any consumer who receives a service in whatever
capacity, regardless of age, gender and nature of service, has the right to
choose whether to continue to receive the service.
• The producer cannot force the customer to buy something that he/she
doesn’t want to.
8. Consumers have the right to be heard in case of a
grievance.
4. RIGHT TO BE HEARD
9. • Consumers have the right to seek redressal
against unfair trade practices and exploitation.
• In other words, if any damage is done to a consumer, he or she has the
right to get compensation depending on the degree of damage.
5. RIGHT TO SEEK REDRESSAL
• The consumer movement in India has led to the formation of various
organisations, known as consumer forums or consumer protection councils.
They guide consumers on how to file cases in the consumer court.
• COPRA, a three-tier quasi judicial machinery at the district, state
and national levels was set up for redressal of consumer disputes.
10. • According to this right, a consumer has the right to acquire the
knowledge and skill about the goods and services in order to become
well informed consumer.
RIGHT TO CONSUMER EDUCATION
• Being conscious of our rights, while purchasing various goods and
services makes us to be able to discriminate and make informed choices.
• The enactment of COPRA has led to the setting up of separate
departments of Consumer Affairs in central and state governments.
• The logo with the letters ISI, Agmark or Hallmark helps
consumers to get assurance of quality while purchasing
goods and services.
