Presentation Scoring Rubrics
Range Fluency Coherence Vocabulary Grammar Range & Accuracy Pronunciation
0 - 2.9
At this point, student has limited ability
to link simple sentences. Oftentimes the
student only gives simple responses
and is frequently unable to convey
basic message. Student expresses
themselves in a telegraphic way: in
phrases or incomplete sentences.
Although some strings of speech are
understandable, most of the speech is
not intelligible
Student seems to use repetitive
vocabulary choice in their speech. The
student seems to have insufficient
vocabulary for less familiar topics. The
student only produces isolated words
or memorised utterances
Overall, student makes makes
numerous errors except for the
memorised expressions. Although
showing efforts, the student mostly is
unable to produce basic sentence
forms.
Although a couple pronunciation
are correct, student produces
frequent incorrect pronunciation
which may have caused some
difficulties for the listener.
3 - 4.9
Overall student can respond to the
questions/ stimuli given. However, there
are some noticeable pauses in the
speech. Student seems to be able to
link basic sentences but with repetitive
use of simple connectives and some
breakdowns in coherence.
As a whole, student is able to talk
about familiar topics but can only
convey basic meaning on unfamiliar
topics. Student also exhibits frequent
errors in word choice.
Student has shown, although limited,
some uses of more complex
structures but these usually contain
errors and may cause some
comprehension problems.
Subordinate structure is scarce in the
student's speech.
Overall, student's pronunciation
has been mostly intelligible and
clear. Student has shown some
effective use of features but this is
not sustained. Student's speech
can generally be understood
throughout though
mispronunciation of individual
words or sounds reduces clarity at
times.
4 Scoring Criterias
Score Range: 0 - 9 per category
Presentation Project Brief
Presentation Scoring Rubrics
Range Fluency Coherence Vocabulary Grammar Range & Accuracy Pronunciation
5 - 5.9
Overall, student can maintain flow of
speech but uses repetition along with
self correction and/or slow speech to
keep going. Student, however, may
over-use certain connectives and
discourse markers. Student can
produce simple speech fluently
however more complex communication
causes fluency issues.
Overall, student manages to talk about
familiar and unfamiliar topics but uses
vocabulary with limited flexibility.
Student has shown a range of more
advanced vocabulary although some
cases of repeated vocabulary are
noticeable.
As a whole, student may make
frequent mistakes with complex
structures though these rarely cause
comprehension problems. At this
point student is able to produce basic
sentence forms with reasonable
accuracy
Student has used some ranges of
pronunciation feature with mixed
errors and success. There are
cases of mother tongue influences
which may have caused
intelligibility.
6 - 7.9
Student has shown the abilities to use a
range of connectives and discourse
markers with some flexibility, Student is
also willing to speak at length though
may lose coherence at times due to
occasional repetition along with self-
correction or hesitation,
Student has a wide enough vocabulary
to discuss topics at length and make
meaning clear in spite of
inappropriacies. Student has shown
some uses in paraphrasing techniques
however there are many occurrences
of inappropriate choices.
Overall, student frequently produces
error-free sentences though some
grammatical mistakes persist.
Student uses a mix of simple and
complex structures but with limited
flexibility
Overall, student's pronunciation is
easy to understand throughout with
only occasional errors. Student's
mother tongue accent has minimal
effect on intelligibility.
8 - 9
Student is able to speak at length and
develop topics fully and appropriately.
Student speaks fluently with only
occasional repetition or self-
correction.
Student shows more flexibility in the
uses of vocabulary. Student even
shows some uses of common and
idiomatic vocabulary skilfully with
occasional inaccuracies.
As a whole, student produces
consistently accurate structures apart
from ‘slips’ characteristic of native
speaker speech. Student also uses a
wide range of structures flexibly.
Student produces mostly accurate
pronunciation and is effortless to
understand. Student sustains
flexible use of features throughout.
