Mike Kuhlen developed a flight delay estimator using a random forest classifier trained on 150 million domestic flights from 1987-2013 to predict delays with 90% accuracy and up to a 0.64 F1 score, comparable to industry standards. The model uses 11 continuous and over 100 categorical features relating to carrier, origin, destination, and timing to build 171 origin and 101 destination models totalling 67GB. Validation shows the model predicts delays with an accuracy and F1 score on par with industry standards despite being developed in only two weeks.
