Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems like Boardmaker use picture symbols to support verbal and written communication for individuals with autism, Down syndrome, speech or language disorders, or behavioral disorders. AAC helps young children develop speech and language skills and supports cognitive development. People may start with pointing at pictures and progress to using buttons to speak words or sentences. AAC provides visual reinforcement for directions, routines, and activities and can be used with Dynavox keyboards or other assistive technologies to supplement speech.
