Team 1 designed a portable power system to provide electricity to areas in South Africa that experience frequent power outages. The system uses renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines to charge batteries, which can then power homes and communities off the grid. Key challenges included keeping costs below $100 given poverty levels, using locally available materials, and creating a versatile design that works in various climate conditions and both with and without the main power grid. The team has so far corresponded with local experts, outlined project objectives, and made a preliminary website and poster. Next steps involve further collaborating with a South African university, refining customer needs, and developing a feasibility study.
