- GOAL OF SLIDE: Discuss main drivers of Process Improvement initiatives (their needs), how we approach it (in a way that highlights our USPs) and the benefits of the approach.Main Points to Cover:Align IT delivery with business valueConsistently at the top of the agenda of all CIOs we speak to is the need for business/IT alignment. To defend against the pressures of globalization and commoditization, the business increasingly thinks in terms of process. Product differentiation is no longer a strategy so there are three strategies open…continue to produce existing products and be lowest cost producer, accept that new products only have a short window of differentiation and therefore produce a constant stream of new products/new markets or find new ways to differentiate i.e. in the experience/servcice that you wrap around your product. The result? …. processes for product/service delivery, processes for new product introduction or processes for customer service….regardless, process is at the heart of business strategy. But….IT is still delivering and supporting functional applications….which means that delivery often fails to meet REAL business requirements of value creation across the orgCollaborative process design, using a model-driven approachIt is critical therefore to have a common framework for both business management and IT delivery based on a common understanding of how the business works and to do this, organizations must ensure that process and it’s execution are explicit & transparent, and thatthis is driven by more than just documentation. The follow-on benefits that we will talk about – automation, visibility, agility, only come if there is an explicit executable framework in place to operationalize process excellence and ensure consistent execution. Processes that are implicit in people or applications cannot be measured and cannot be used as a common language for alignment, management, delivery and changeA shared framework for managing business valueUSP – that’s why SAG believes so strongly that BPM (as a management framework) and SOA (as an agile delivery platform) fit strongly together…it’s one of our core differentiators. If the business and IT continue to use disparate tools to manage the lifecycle then there will be no alignment…..BPM is the interface/glueEnable efficient processes and productive workersWith an explicit process framework in place, we can now focus on exploiting it for optimized operational execution, Optimized and automated workflow and intuitive, composite applicationsthe goal is to define an optimal process that removes work from people (freeing them to add real value) and has as much automation as possible (using business rules, existing services etc.) and consistently coordinates the work that people must ll stdo through composite applicationsProcess resources work harder and smarterKey is making ALL the resources at your disposal work harder (do more) and smarter (focusing on the right things)….this includes people, information, documents, applications etc.This is one of our key USPs….we provide one tool to handle all process types/resources. As you embark on your PI journey, you will do many projects, some will be manual workflow intensive, some (e.g. STP) will be application intensive, some (e.g. case based) will be document intensive. But you cannot be expected to have to invest in different tools and different skillsets for each flavor that you come across. Transform the business based on factsFinally, purely efficient processes are not good enough (if that was the goal, we could just build a hard-coded app and embed the most efficient automated process) – but things change and processes need to be agileAgility requires insight, real-time, actionable data on how to keep the business optimized – “you can’t manage what you can’t measure” (Peter Drucker) – you need to be able to see where processes are sub-optimal compared to KPIs. Preferably you want to be able to see the root cause of issues so that you have the opportunity to take specific action and preferably you want to be able to see process issues before they become customer issues. Business Transformation and Process Improvement must be based on facts not gut feel. The business is changing fast and in ways that we do not expect…..experience and gut feel don’t work any more…Real-time process monitoring and change by business expertsKnowing what to change is important but delivering the tools to change in the same environment and making them available to the right people in the process is critical e.g. tools to change the process, change decision points with business rules, change UIs quickly, etc.BPM is about exposing ‘flex points’ from the underlying architecture and making them intuitive for business users to ‘tweak’Continuous process improvement without the burden of application changeAll of the above is critical for the business to enable CPI, but it is also critical for IT. It makes maintenance and incremental development easier for them BUT also allows them to share responsibility of change with the business and further reduce their burden (at this point some people in IT may object that they don’t want to givfe the business more control, but that is the role of strong governance – with good governance tools/methodology, IT can share responsibility for change without losing control).SUMMARY: Make sure you have left them with a clear indication of our USPs:1. We deliver a common framework for managing and delivering business value by both the business and IT - the combination of BPM and SOA is a key differentiator….without one you don’t get the full benefits of the other.2. We provide a unified platform that allows all process resources to be harnessed to improve business efficiency and productivity – not just systems, but people, documents, information etc.3. We provide the tools for operational transparency in the same environment as the tools to make rapid, iterative changes. Giving the business the control it seeks and reducing the burden on IT that it demands.
