Before starting his current role as CEO of the St. Hope Foundation in Houston, Robert Goodie served as executive director of the Donald R. Watkins Memorial Foundation. In his work with St. Hope, Robert Goodie oversees several health care delivery and prevention programs focused on chronic and communicable illnesses such as hepatitis C and HIV. The prophylactic drugs PrEP and PEP have greatly advanced progress towards HIV elimination. PrEP is a daily pill that can reduce the likelihood of developing HIV. PrEP is recommended for people who have an elevated risk of contracting HIV. This includes people with HIV positive partners, people with multiple sexual partners, or people who inject drugs using shared needles. When taken as recommended and combined with medical monitoring, PrEP can reduce HIV transmission through sex by 99 percent and through intravenous drug use by 70 percent. On the other hand, PEP is a short-term prophylactic intended for people who have been exposed to HIV. PEP is most effective when started less than three days after exposure. A PEP course is prescribed for 28 days.

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. AIDS is a result of the development of the HIV virus into a more serious condition. AIDS was first recognised by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1981 and its cause, HIV, identified in the early 1980s.
Understanding HIV
HIV is a contagious infection which attacks the immune system, reducing its effectiveness and leaving the body susceptible to infections. The HIV infection damages the cells the body needs to fight illnesses. AIDS can be diagnosed when the number of immune system cells (CD4 cells) in the blood of a person with HIV drops below a certain level.
There is no cure for HIV or AIDS, but there are treatments that can slow down the disease, and help prevent the onset of AIDS. It takes around ten years for someone with HIV to develop AIDS, but it can be prevented with early detection and treatment of the HIV

This document outlines coverage criteria for the medication Truvada (emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) for the treatment of HIV infection, post-exposure prophylaxis to reduce the risk of HIV infection after occupational or non-occupational exposure, and pre-exposure prophylaxis to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV infection in high-risk adults. Initial authorization is approved for PrEP for 6 months if screening shows negative HIV status and counseling on safe sex practices has occurred. Reauthorization requires continued screening, counseling, and confirmation of high risk status. PEP is authorized for 1 month if initiated within 72 hours of exposure. PEP involves taking anti-HIV drugs within 72 hours of exposure to potentially reduce the risk of HIV infection. It consists of a combination of 2-3 drugs taken daily for 4 weeks. To be effective, treatment must start as soon as possible after exposure and has little effect if started after 72 hours. Common side effects include nausea and fatigue. Healthcare workers are at highest risk of occupational exposure through needlesticks or contact with blood and bodily fluids.

- An estimated 33 million people are living with HIV globally, with 2.7 million new infections in 2007, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. By 2007, only 3 million people had access to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, while 6.7 million were in immediate need of treatment.
- There is recognition that ARV therapy may play a role in HIV prevention through post-exposure prophylaxis, pre-exposure prophylaxis, and treatment of HIV-positive individuals. GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS result from the ingestion of pathogens that cause infections at the level of this tract, generally being transmitted by food, water and hands contaminated by microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, Rotavirus among others that are generally contained in feces, thus configuring a FECAL-ORAL type of transmission.
Among the factors that lead to the occurrence of gastrointestinal infections are the hygienic and sanitary deficiencies that characterize our markets and other places where raw or cooked food is sold, poor environmental sanitation in communities, deficiencies in water treatment (or in the process of its plumbing), risky hygienic-sanitary habits (not washing hands after major and/or minor needs), among others.
These are generally consequences (signs and symptoms) resulting from gastrointestinal infections: diarrhea, vomiting, fever and malaise, among others.
The treatment consists of replacing lost liquids and electrolytes (drinking drinking water and other recommended liquids, including consumption of juicy fruits such as papayas, apples, pears, among others that contain water in their composition).
To prevent this, it is necessary to promote health education, improve the hygienic-sanitary conditions of markets and communities in general as a way of promoting, preserving and prolonging PUBLIC HEALTH.
Gastritis and Gastric Health
Gastric Health is one of the most relevant concerns in human health, with gastrointestinal infections being among the main illnesses that affect humans.
Among gastric problems, we have GASTRITIS AND GASTRIC ULCERS as the main public health problems. Gastritis and gastric ulcers normally result from inflammation and corrosion of the walls of the stomach (gastric mucosa) and are generally associated (caused) by the bacterium Helicobacter pylor, which, according to the literature, this bacterium settles on these walls (of the stomach) and starts to release urease that ends up altering the normal pH of the stomach (acid), which leads to inflammation and corrosion of the mucous membranes and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.

5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT or Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that serves a range of roles in the human body. It is sometimes referred to as the happy chemical since it promotes overall well-being and happiness.
It is mostly found in the brain, intestines, and blood platelets.
5-HT is utilised to transport messages between nerve cells, is known to be involved in smooth muscle contraction, and adds to overall well-being and pleasure, among other benefits. 5-HT regulates the body's sleep-wake cycles and internal clock by acting as a precursor to melatonin.
It is hypothesised to regulate hunger, emotions, motor, cognitive, and autonomic processes.

- 4. The prophylactic drugs PrEP and PEP have greatly advanced progress towards HIV elimination. PrEP is a daily pill that can reduce the likelihood of developing HIV. PrEP is recommended for people who have an elevated risk of contracting HIV. This includes people with HIV positive partners, people with multiple sexual partners, or people who inject drugs using shared needles.
- 5. When taken as recommended and combined with medical monitoring, PrEP can reduce HIV transmission through sex by 99 percent and through intravenous drug use by 70 percent. On the other hand, PEP is a short-term prophylactic intended for people who have been exposed to HIV. PEP is most effective when started less than three days after exposure. A PEP course is prescribed for 28 days.
