The pericardium is a fibroserous sac that surrounds the heart and roots of the great vessels. It is located in the middle mediastinum and extends from the 2nd to 6th costal cartilages and 5th to 8th thoracic vertebrae. The pericardium is formed of two layers: the fibrous pericardium which is a fibrous sac attached to the diaphragm, and the serous pericardium which forms a closed sac lining the fibrous pericardium and covering the heart. The pericardium receives its blood supply from various arteries and drains into veins, and is innervated by phrenic nerves.
