Taboo Words In Manggaraian Language:
Socio-Pragmatic Analysis

BACKGROUND
• language is a key instrument for people to carry out communication for various purposes in
a wide range of contexts.
• language is employed to deal with good things and bad ones.
• Any language in the world has a system of lexicons that conveys negative meaning.
• The lexicons having negative or ‘bad’ sense are generally considered to be offensive,
forbiden or rude.
• Every language has taboo words, including Manggaraian language.
• Taboo words are generally perceived “negative, rude, and offensive”
• A number of studies have been conducted to analyse taboo words in various languages.
English(Jay, 2009; Putri, Derli Elsa, Sembiring, 2019; Rosenberg & Garcia, 2017; Sugara, Ria Dewi Hudayani and
Saparianingsih, 2020), Indonesian language(Samosir, Widya Nola, Meisuri & Putri, 2020; Wibowo, 2020), Balinese(Apriani,
2017), and other languages (Lidbäck, 2020; Njoroge, 2014)
• The investigation of taboo words in Manggaraian language is significant to be carried
out as it employes a unique system of lexicons or phrases.
RESEARCH PROBLEM
(1) what are types of taboo words, referents and subjects?
(2) what are the functions of taboo words used in
interaction?
(3) What are the factors affecting people to use taboo
words in interaction?

 Manggaraian language recognises taboo word which is called ireng
 Taboo words of Manggaraian language contains negative, rude and offensive meaning.
 Taboo words are categorized into four types : profanity, scatology, epithet, obscenity
 Taboo words have specific referents and subjects.
 Taboo words serve some functions : expressing feeling/emotion, cursing, swearing, attracting
attention, closeness, humor, group identity/ethnics.
 Some factors affect speakers to use taboo words : psychological condition, speaker-hearer
relationship, authority, social-physical setting.
 Recognising taboo words in Manggaraian language is important both for the native speakers and
others from different languages to anticipate and avoid a conflict and impoliteness in interaction
 Socio-pragmatically, taboo words are forbidden in Manggaraian society and culture.
