SlideShare a Scribd company logo
To construct a question in the past using the WH
questions, first place the word with WH (What,
Where, Why, Who, WHICH, etc.) followed by an
auxiliary for the last time (this can be DID, WAS /
WERE or HAD depending on the type of question)
and then the subject , plus the complement.
When…
It is used when in the past to know the date or when
something happened.
Examples:
• When did they sell thier home? (¿Cuándo vendieron
su casa?
• When were you traveled? (¿Cuándo vas a viajar?)
• When did they leave at Cuzco ? (¿Cuándo se fueron a
cusco?)
• When was your birthday? (¿Cuándo fue tu
cumpleaños?)
• when was she born? (¿Cuándo nacio ella?
WHY…
We use why in the past to ask the reason or cause why
something happened, happens or will happen: it is ours
why.
Examples:
 Why did you study philosofy? (¿Por qué estudiaste
filosofía?)
 Why did she leave? (¿Por qué se fue?)
 Why was he upset? (¿Por qué él estaba molesto?)
 Why were you buy that house? (¿Por qué comprarás
aquella casa?)
 Why were you taking too long? (¿Por qué tardando
demaciado?)
We use who in the past to ask something in relation to someone or
when you want to find out who did something.
Examples:
 Who was at the party? (¿Quién estaba en la fiesta?)
 Who was working in the garage? (¿Quién estaba trabajando en el garaje?)
 Who was with you? (¿Quién estaba contigo?)
 Who was he? (¿Quien fue él?)
We use whom ...? In the past to ask who ... or who was something.
Utilizamos who si se puede responder con he o she, utilizamos whom si se puede responder
con him o her.
Examples:
 Whom did you visit at the hospital? (¿A quién visitaste en el hospital?)
 Whom did you write? (¿A quién escribes?)
 Whom did you invite to the party? (¿A quién invitaste a la fiesta?)
 Whom did they choose for the job? (¿A quién eligieron para el trabajo?)
 Whom did you sell your car? (¿A quién le vendiste tu automóvil?)
 Whom did you ask for permission? (¿A quién le pediste permiso?)
WHICH…
We use which to ask about a limited number of
objects or animals. The difference with what is
this is for more general questions.
EXAMPLES:
 Which was the book you read last week? (¿Cuál era el libro
que leíste la semana pasada?)
 Which was the lamp you broke? (¿Cuál era la lámpara que
rompiste?)
 Which was one yours? ¿Cuál fue el tuyo?
 Which was month is the coldest? ¿Cuál fue el mes más frío?

  • 2. To construct a question in the past using the WH questions, first place the word with WH (What, Where, Why, Who, WHICH, etc.) followed by an auxiliary for the last time (this can be DID, WAS / WERE or HAD depending on the type of question) and then the subject , plus the complement.

  • 5. WHY… We use why in the past to ask the reason or cause why something happened, happens or will happen: it is ours why. Examples:  Why did you study philosofy? (¿Por qué estudiaste filosofía?)  Why did she leave? (¿Por qué se fue?)  Why was he upset? (¿Por qué él estaba molesto?)  Why were you buy that house? (¿Por qué comprarás aquella casa?)  Why were you taking too long? (¿Por qué tardando demaciado?)
  • 6. We use who in the past to ask something in relation to someone or when you want to find out who did something. Examples:  Who was at the party? (¿Quién estaba en la fiesta?)  Who was working in the garage? (¿Quién estaba trabajando en el garaje?)  Who was with you? (¿Quién estaba contigo?)  Who was he? (¿Quien fue él?) We use whom ...? In the past to ask who ... or who was something. Utilizamos who si se puede responder con he o she, utilizamos whom si se puede responder con him o her. Examples:  Whom did you visit at the hospital? (¿A quién visitaste en el hospital?)  Whom did you write? (¿A quién escribes?)  Whom did you invite to the party? (¿A quién invitaste a la fiesta?)  Whom did they choose for the job? (¿A quién eligieron para el trabajo?)  Whom did you sell your car? (¿A quién le vendiste tu automóvil?)  Whom did you ask for permission? (¿A quién le pediste permiso?)
  • 7. WHICH… We use which to ask about a limited number of objects or animals. The difference with what is this is for more general questions. EXAMPLES:  Which was the book you read last week? (¿Cuál era el libro que leíste la semana pasada?)  Which was the lamp you broke? (¿Cuál era la lámpara que rompiste?)  Which was one yours? ¿Cuál fue el tuyo?  Which was month is the coldest? ¿Cuál fue el mes más frío?
