Lorraine (Reina) Floyd teaches pre-algebra and honors algebra at Irmo Middle School, home of the Yellow Jackets, in District Five of Lexington and Richland counties in South Carolina. There are 65 teachers at Irmo, 81% of whom have advanced degrees. There are 400 white, 409 African American, 40 Hispanic, and 25 Asian Pacific Islander students at Irmo; 146 of these students have disabilities, and 23 have limited English proficiency. Sixty-seven percent of the seventh and eighth graders at Irmo are enrolled in high school credit courses. In 2011, Irmo Middle School exceeded standards for progress toward the 2020 South Carolina performance vision: By 2020 all students will graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete successfully in the global economy, participate in a democratic society, and contribute positively as members of families and communities.
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
My interest in teaching was first sparked when as a young child my father regularly played “school” with me. He let me “teach” him basic math concepts like addition and subtraction well before I formally learned them in school. Later, in the eighth grade, I had the distinct pleasure of having both my language arts and social studies classes taught by Mrs. Bowers. She approached classroom management and assessment in an engaging and inspirational manner. Ultimately, I went into teaching in hopes of sparking a love of learning in students like she did with me.
Where do you find joy in teaching?
I derive my joy from watching students become more comfortable with themselves and each other as mathematicians. They build their confidence in their math abilities by discussing and supporting their thinking process. I love hearing my students participate in mathematical discourse.
It’s sad, but so many of my students start the school year with a defeatist attitude. Somewhere along the way someone sent them the message that they aren’t capable of learning, and therefore it’s not worth the time or effort. The degree to which these students gain confidence varies. At first, many of these students view my encouragement as bothering them, but the joy on their faces when they gain understanding is more than worth their initial discomfort. Unfortunately, not all of my students experience the level of success that I would like them to, but they all experience enough success in our classroom that I see an improvement in their effort and self-efficacy by the end of the year.
How would you describe excellence in teaching?
To me excellence in teaching is like perfection—it isn’t something to be obtained, but to continuously strive for. I strive to engage my students, meet them where they are, and help them rise to where they need to be.

The Strategy was built from the ground up to combat fundamental forces hindering the mathematics outcomes of Black children in the West: (1) Resistant worldviews about Black children, (2) faulty assumptions about what mathematics is, (3) faulty assumptions about how mathematics should be taught, (4) and institutionalized impotence of senior leadership to address policy, resources and systemic barriers. Chronicled in this presentation are the successes and challenges in implementing the kind of urgent reform needed to maximize outcomes for Black student populations amidst political, cultural and historical obstacles. The perspective of mathematics education leaders and professionals at senior, mid and teacher levels are shared.

Introduction
Numeracy skills have been an issue in the academic endeavors of many students in Australia. More so the numeracy skills are relatively poor in indigenous students compared to non-indigenous; the achievement gap between indigenous and non-indigenous widen over time and there is worrying evidence that the size of gap in recent years has been increasing (Klenowski, 2009). Indigenous people have not been recognized in the constitution therefore they are living as immigrants in their own mother land; this means they have been sidelined in national development activities, such as education, making it difficult to close the achievement gap between them and non-indigenous people.
Many people use the word numeracy interchangeably with mathematical skills, even though related, numeracy is a broad field that involves mathematical skills, problem solving and communication skills. Numeracy goes beyond the learning process that is mainly employed in a school setting; numeracy involves the understanding of quantitative techniques that are used to communicate, solve problems, respond to issues and help in the day to day undertakings. It is almost next to impossible to achieve numeracy skills without literacy.
Indigenous students have poor numeracy skills that are as a result economic, policy and pedagogical issues. The high levels of truancy and low performance can be attributed to the economic challenges that indigenous students undergo. Educational policies have not been able to provide a level playing grounds for indigenous and non-indigenous children, there has been unequal opportunities in terms of financing, tutelage and the curriculum. Introduction
Numeracy skills have been an issue in the academic endeavors of many students in Australia. More so the numeracy skills are relatively poor in indigenous students compared to non-indigenous; the achievement gap between indigenous and non-indigenous widen over time and there is worrying evidence that the size of gap in recent years has been increasing (Klenowski, 2009). Indigenous people have not been recognized in the constitution therefore they are living as immigrants in their own mother land; this means they have been sidelined in national development activities, such as education, making it difficult to close the achievement gap between them and non-indigenous people.
Many people use the word numeracy interchangeably with mathematical skills, even though related, numeracy is a broad field that involves mathematical skills, problem solving and communication skills. Numeracy goes beyond the learning process that is mainly employed in a school setting; numeracy involves the understanding of quantitative techniques that are used to communicate, solve problems, respond to issues and help in the day to day undertakings. It is almost next to impossible to achieve numeracy skills without literacy.
Indigenous students have poor numeracy skills that are as a result economic, policy and pedagogical issues. The high levels of truancy and low performance can be attributed to the economic challenges that indigenous students undergo. Educational policies have not been able to provide a level playing grounds for indigenous and non-indigenous children, there has been unequal opportunities in terms of financing, tutelage and the curriculum. Conclusion It has been found in the present study that girls at Upper primary school, college stages outperform boys in mathematics achievement and reading comprehension .Girls showing more interest in reading then boys. To improve reading comprehension of boys parent and teacher should encourage the childrens or read magazine ,novals etc and teacher should encourage assist reading additional factors that can helps to improve reading skills include appropriate grouping practices instruction in mathematics
