A food chain is a sequence of organisms where each uses the next lower member as a food source. Plants are primary producers that create their own food through photosynthesis. Animals are consumers that eat plants or other animals for energy. There are four types of consumers - herbivores that eat plants, carnivores that eat animals, omnivores that eat plants and animals, and detritivores that eat dead materials. Consumers can also be classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary depending on their position in the food chain.
