2. A Trophy
When I was a high school student, I entered a drawing
competition in my high school. The theme of the drawing
competition was ‘The person you most loved’. This competition
was two weeks long and the subject had to be a person. The first
three runners-up will received a gift.
As a participant in the competition, I chose my mother as my
model. I took almost one week to sketch my mother’s face. I took
another day to adjust the proportions of my picture compared to
the real proportions. During this period, I referenced a lot of
peoples’ album online and in the library. I learned how to sketch a
good picture and gained a lot of knowledge about how to sketch.
Finally, I spent four days to draw and paint my picture. I felt
satisfied with my finalized painting, as painting is my strength.
Three weeks later, the result came out. I was the winner of my
school drawing competition, and I was very proud of myself. I
received a trophy and a schoolbag as the winning prize. The
experience and exposure I gained from this competition allowed
me to improve my drawing skills and improved my confidence.
3. My Undergraduate Certificate
As a high school graduate, I faced my first
choice in my life. I was interested in the
graphic design industry, and I am also very
interested in engineering professions. As a
girl, learning engineering is more difficult than
learning graphic design. Finally, I chose an
engineering program in a local university in my
hometown. However, after I studied the
engineering program, I found it was very
challenging for me. I wanted to change the
program at that time, but I didn’t want to give
up without trying.
I decided to continue my studies in this
program. I realized that I needed more time to
study than other people. I forced myself to do
a weekly study list and tried to finish it on time.
I went to the library and read engineering
I got many useful resources from the library. I did some project activities during the summer time with
books;
other professors and students. Sometimes, I would retake the class if I had some problems
understanding the concept of the course.
After four years of hard work, I graduated from the engineering program and received my undergraduate
certificate. During the graduation ceremony, I cried. Those four years were my most memorable
experience. I learned how to manage my time, I also learned how to be persistent and believed in my
abilities to succeed.
4. Volunteer
In 2008, China hosted the Olympic Games. My hometown,
Tianjin, was one of the cities that supported Beijing in the
competitions. Tianjin needed a lot of volunteers. At that time,
I was a part-time graphic designer in Canon China Co., LTD.
I participated as a volunteer in designing the brochure for
Tianjin City. I was responsible for designing the brochure with
other volunteers. The requests for the brochure needed to be
simple, and printed in Chinese and English and illustrates the
urban landscape of Tianjin.
At the beginning, we separated the brochure into different
parts, one person was responsible for designing the
brochure. However, we found our designing styles were quite
different. We had to do some adjustments of our

and colored it. After our discussion, everyone accepted my opinion. As planned all the members drew an
outline, and we chose the best one as the final style. Once our director agreed, we started to color the
brochure. We had a meeting to discuss the color style that would be used. Once we decided on the color
style, the brochure was divided into parts and distributed among the members to color.
Finally, through all our efforts, the final brochure was published. We were all excited and satisfied of our
accomplishment. I learned how to communicate with other people, I improved my communication skills, as
a team member and as a team leader.
5. Professor
After I entered Centennial College, my first English course was
Communication 132. I was not good at English, and I didn’t like
to learn English. I was so disappointed when my midterm grade
came out, it was a D+. I worried if I should drop this course or
not. At that time, my professor, Mrs. Ingrid, she talked to me.
She encouraged me to learn English and improved my
language. She suggested that I should go to tutoring. I
accepted her suggestion.
After I decided to try my best to pass this course, I went to one
on one tutoring and English workshops twice a week. I
recorded my English problems in a small notebook. I also
listened to English music all the time, and watched American
TV to improve my listening. Moreover, I wrote one diary per
week. After 2 months effort, I felt my English had made a lot of
progress.
At the end, I got a B+ in this course. Ingrid congratulated me
and I was very proud of myself. Now, I miss her smile and her
good attitude towards her students. From her class, I gained a
lot of knowledge about English. I improved my listening,
speaking and writing skills. I still go to tutoring four times a
week to practice my English.
6. Travel
I have been looking forward to travelling alone since I was a
child. However, I have not had enough money. At the end of
2009, I worked as a part time graphic designer in Canon
China Co., Ltd. I saved enough money for my travelling, and
this dream came true.
I enrolled in a Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand travel plan
with BTG International Travel & Tour. I told my parents all the
information about my plan to make sure they don’t worry. I
prepared my camera, cell phone, clothes and other stuff that I
needed. Two days later, I started my trip. Travelling in
Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand not only allows me to
appreciate their fascinating architecture and natural
attractiveness, but also I came to know the rich and
interesting historical facts about these countries. Thailand’s
food mixes every taste and texture, and I really enjoy it. I also
went on a cruise to Phuket Island. The cruise was terrific.
I came back to China ten days later. I bought some gifts for
my family and friends. From this trip, I learned more about the
history and culture of these countries. Moreover, I became
more independent because I knew how to take care of
myself.
