Man's subtle planning and woman's impending danger
1. Extreme close up of the main man tapping his finger against his forehead in a
slow and subtle motion. Suggesting that he is planning his next move. The idea
that it is done discretely highlights his masked personality and the challenge
between appearances and reality. Timing: 5 seconds.
2. Close up, panning upwards of the women which gradually leads to a still shot of
her face. She is talking and smiling, engaging in conversation. Speech is masked
by the music. The camera panning shows he is judging her (up and down). Her
movements and speech is shown through his eyes: which is why the speech is
blurred, because his madness disguises normality. Timing: 6 seconds.
3. Low angle tracking shot of the two characters feet and legs. Man: straight and
neat in contrast to her pore posture. Emphasises his anal characteristics when
placed against her posture. Timing: 4 seconds.
4. Point of view shot of his dinner plate, neat and OCD arrangement of food
slightly eaten already. Exaggerates his fetishistic persona. Timing: 3 seconds.
5. Extreme close up of him slicing the steak. The blood, which seeps out of the steak,
becomes a metaphor for slicing someone’s skin almost. Red connotes danger,
which forebodes what is to come. Timing: 4 seconds.
6. Close up of him pouring a glass of wine for her – match on action to an extreme
close up of wine going into the glass. The wine is symbolic of her blood,
foreboding the killing that happens further on. Timing: 3 seconds.
7. Close up of her drinking the wine, focuses on the lips . Illustrates how she
is drinking her ‘own’ blood: shows how she is leading herself to her own
death. Timing: 2 seconds.
8. Camera follows her arm as she places the wine glass down. Shows how his
eyes are following her every move. Timing: 2 seconds.
9. Still shot of his hand reaching for hers, but she pulls away. Her hand being
placed over hers shows him as a possessive character that craves her
affection. Yet the fact that she pulls away strikes a chord in him, which leads
to his split personality returning. Timing: 5 seconds.
10. Camera follows his hand as he touches the knife subtly. The instant change
between her hand and the knife, symbolise how things can go from good to bad
in a matter of seconds. Timing: 3 seconds.
11. POV shot of her getting up and leaving. Implies that he is still fixed on her, and
angry over the fact she is about to leave. Placing the audience in his shoes you
can almost feel his anger. Timing: 3 seconds.
12. Close up shot of CD turning in player, which reinforces the music playing in the
background (diegetic) Sets the tone for the film, the music isn’t commonly
associated with this genre, which creates a shocking response. It also shows
how although something bad is about to happen, everything else carries on the
same exaggerating how isolated she is. Timing: 5 seconds.
13. Wine glass falls over and seeps into the white table cloth, dolly movement of
the lipstick stain on the glass. The wine is symbolic of her blood; instead of
showing her death the audience can identify what has happened from the
subtle clues. The blood seeping into the white highlights how the damage is
done and cannot be reversed. Timing: 5 seconds.
