Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. was founded in 1941 as Scindia Shipyard and was nationalized in 1961. It was built by industrialist Walchand Hirachand and the first ship constructed was named Jai Usha. The company was transferred from the Ministry of Shipping to the Ministry of Defence in 2009. The board of directors includes several retired naval officers with engineering and management backgrounds, as well as an IAS officer who was previously an economics professor and worked for the International Labour Organization.

2. Introduction:
 It was founded as Scindia Shipyard.
 It was built by industrialist Walchand Hirachand as a part of The Scindia
Steam Navigation Company Ltd.
 The foundation stone for the shipyard was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 21
June 1941.
 The first ship constructed there was named Jai Usha.
 It was nationalized in 1961 and renamed Hindustan Shipyard Limited(HSL).
 In 2009 HSL was transferred from the Ministry of Shipping to the Ministry of
Defence.

He is the Chairman and Managing Director of HSL. He was commissioned in Indian
Navy on July 1, 1981.
2.Cmde Ashok Bhal, VSM, IN(Retd)
He is the Director(Strategic Project) in HSL. He is a B.E. from IIT-Roorkee and
M.Tech form IIT, Kharagpur with MBA.
3. Cmde A S Mitra, IN(Retd)
He is the Director(Ship Building) in HSL. He is a former navy officer involved in
design and production of several Naval warships. He is an alumni of IIT Kharagpur
and PG from IIT Delhi.

He is the Director(Finance & Commercial)’s Office, HSL.
5. Cmde P H M Salih, IN(Retd.)
He is the Director(Corporate Planning & Personnel)’s Office, HSL. He educated form
IIT Delhi. He was at Submarine Overseeing Team(Vishakahapatnam).
6. Ms Surina Rajan, IAS
She is the Director at HSL. She is an IAS officer and prior to that she taught economics
at Graduate level for 3 years. She is a gold medalist with B.A. Hons(Economics) from
Kurukshetra University & M.A./M.Phil(Economics) form Punjab University. She had
done a certificate course in Sustainable Development. She had been the All India
Topper in Indian Economic Service and All India Topper in Indian Administrative
Service. She worked at the International Labour Organization on secondment form
2003-09.

7. Dr CA Bijaya Kumar Sahoo
He is the Director at HSL. He has done PhD along with LLB and MBA. He is also a
Chartered Accountant. He worked as Central Statutory Auditor of Bank of India
and Andhra Pradesh.
