WHY DO I NEED
POWERSHELL
Hosted by Terry Smith MCT

Several Reasons to Learn PowerShell.
It is a strategic Microsoft Technology.
Using a Graphical User Interface (GUI) is slow and costly.
There are a lot of new product releases showing up with a
PowerShell module.
New Graphical User Interface tools use PowerShell as their front
end.
PowerShell is designed to promote interoperability between
products.
If you don’t learn it, someone else will and gain a completive
advantage over those who haven’t learned PowerShell.
It is a strategic Microsoft Technology.
PowerShell version 1 released in November 2006.
It was one of the primary management tools released with Exchange 2007
in December 2006.
PowerShell version 2 released as a key component of Windows 7 and
Server 2008 R2.
PowerShell version 3 released as a key component of Windows 8 and
Server 2012.
PowerShell version 4 released as a key component of Windows 8.1 and
Server 2012 R2.
PowerShell version 5 is available as part of Windows Management
Framework 5.0 Preview.
Using a GUI is slow and costly.
GUI administrative tools are primarily designed to work with one object at a
time.
This slows down bulk operations and repetitive tasks significantly.
This slow down effect increases the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of your
network.
PowerShell scripting has the opposite effect on bulk operations and
repetitive tasks and therefore reduces the TCO of your network.
There are a lot of new product releases
showing up with a PowerShell module.
Exchange, SQL and SharePoint have included PowerShell as one of the
primary administrative tools.
Active Directory Domain Services has a PowerShell module designed for
Administration.
Most of the System Center 2012 R2 family can be totally administered with
in PowerShell modules.
With the release of System Center 2012 SP1 Configuration Manager there
were 470 new PowerShell Commands added.
New GUI tools use PowerShell as their
front end.
Exchange Management Console.
Active Directory Administrative Center is based on a PowerShell front end.
Some of the System Center consoles use a PowerShell front end.
Microsoft Management Console version 3.0 is designed to leverage
PowerShell to create new snapins from PowerShell.
PowerShell is designed to promote
interoperability between products.
As an example of this interoperability we could design a PowerShell script
or function to use the Get-ADComputer command from the Active
Directory module to supply a list of servers so we could run other
commands like Get-Service to see a listing of services running on those
servers.
Summary – Why should I learn PowerShell.
PowerShell reduces the Total Cost of Ownership of your network.
PowerShell simplifies the Automation of very complex time consuming
tasks.
PowerShell provide a great deal of Consistency in managing your network.
PowerShell is the future of Microsoft’s Management model. Microsoft is
working on converting all management tasks to PowerShell. Also many
third party vendors like Citrix, VMWare, Symantec and Cisco are designing
PowerShell scripts to manage their products in a Windows environment.
