2. Self-awareness is being conscious of oneself,
including one’s traits, feelings and behaviors.
It is becoming aware of what you do, and why
you do it.
Self-awareness is an enabling tool that
recognizes what is working and not working
for us. When we know ourselves we can
monitor our negative traits and strive to
improve on them.
3. Self-esteem is the way we feel about
ourselves. It is the ability to feel confidence
in, and respect for, oneself. It is a feeling of
personal competence and self-worth. It is
instilled in us during our youth. While self-
esteem involves feelings about oneself, it
develops to a great extent from interactions
with family, friends and social circumstances
throughout life.
4. Self-esteem can be challenged during
adolescence by rapid physical and social
changes and the development of one’s own
values and beliefs. Yet self-esteem is
critically important at this stage in life.
5. Being constantly criticized by family, friends,
and society tends to slowly strip us of our
feelings of self-worth.
If we have high self-esteem, we feel good and
respect ourselves, we feel confident to say
what we think, and we expect people to treat
us well.
6. A person’s identity and personality as well as
one’s behavior are shaped by many factors,
both inherited and by the environment where
one grew up.
Life events and experiences influence and/or
affect the kind of person we become and our
own outlook in life.

opinions because to a certain extent these

he/she will relate with other people.

We can be strong as a person when we are
knowledgeable. Correct information is an

in life. The realization of these goals are
influenced by many factors – how we were
reared, the opportunities open to us, the
support of the system – culture, government,
status of women, gender.

human being-experiences and personality. It
is more complex and encompasses many
things and is subject to life-long dynamic
change. It includes:
* how we feel about being a male and a
female
* our relationship with same and the
opposite sex
13. * our psychosocial development, sexual
identity and gender roles
* our physical appearance, genital and
reproductive processes like sexual
intercourse and childbearing
14. Encompasses the physical, emotional and
social changes happening in an adolescent.
