1. Essay #3 My Essay was actually tackling two subjects. Times in history where slaves were used as a sex source as well as times that people have used the bible or other religions to fulfill a personal political agenda.
2. This is a Slave Cabin I felt that this picture was a good comparison for The Handmaid’s Tale. Like in this picture, are of the slaves (handmaid’s, martha’s, etc.) were kept in one place and was surrounded by each other. I guess it’s almost like a anti-depressant tactic to show everyone that they are not alone in their misery. Picture Found: http://american-slavery.com/images/many_slaves_with_cabins.jpg
3. Burning of the Cross The KKK is a good example of people who use religion for their own gain. Their belief’s didn’t coincide with any scripture, but they went with their plans anyways. 4. Slaves in America’s History This picture shows the repercussions that slave owners were terrified of. I’m sure that this is one reason they were so harsh on woman in The Handmaid’s Tale. They must have been afraid of them revolting as well, so they kept an iron grip on them. You can tell that life for slaves was considered better than what it really was by the slave owners. Picture from: http://imagecache6.allposters.com/LRG/22/2245/OC2ZD00Z.jpg
5. Carl Jung I feel that Carl Jung had a huge influence over Atwood in an indirect way through him being an inspiration to her teacher . Picture from: http://www.personality-quiz-tools.com/images/carl_jung2.jpg
6. The Root of The Handmaid’s Tale I feel that all of the problems in the book stem from their continual usage of content taken out of context from the Bible. Using religion to push forward your political ideas is never a good recipe for society and how it’s run. Picture from: http://nickbaines.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/the-holy-bible.jpg
