control in Act 2 Scene 1 of the play
Success Criteria:
3. You MUST understand the main events of the scene and
show awareness of how these relate the theme of power.
(C grade description)



2. You SHOULD analyse the main events
of the scene and identify and comment on how these relate
to the theme of power
(B grade description)
1. You COULD analyse and evaluate the main events
of the scene and how these relate to the theme of power
(A-A* grade description)
Summary- Act 2:Scene
1


Ariel enters, invisible, and plays music that makes Gonzalo and Alonso fall asleep.
As they sleep, Antonio slyly presents a murder plot to Sebastian. Since Ferdinand
is almost definitely dead, Antonio says, Alonso's death would make Sebastian King
of Naples. Sebastian is drawn in, remembering how Antonio overthrew his own
brother. He hesitates a bit, though, asking Antonio if his conscience bothers him
for what he did to Prospero. Antonio dismisses the question.
Sebastian is convinced to go ahead with the plot, and Sebastian and Antonio draw
their swords. Just then, Ariel enters again, and sings a soft warning. Gonzalo and
Alonso awaken. Caught with their swords out, the two conspirators claim somewhat
unconvincingly that they heard loud bellowing nearby and sought to protect their
comrades from a beast they believed was nearby.
Gonzalo and Alonso, unsettled, draw their swords and exit, followed by Ariel, who
plans to tell Prospero of the plot.
Task One

 In pairs.

 Match the quotations to the correct parts of the
speech where Antonio tries to convince Sebastian
to kill his brother (Alonso, the King of Naples)

10 minutes
Task Two


5 minutes

 Pick the quotations you think are most important to
the theme of power and control and copy them into
your folder.
Act 2: Scene 2

 Choose one quotation and analyse it using PEE

During Act 2 scene 1 Antonio uses flattery to try
and persuade Sebastian to kill his brother the king
calling him ‘noble Sebastian’ . This reveals Antonio’s
manipulative nature and suggests that he is using
Sebastian to gain more power.
Knowledge check

 Come up with three questions to test another
group’s knowledge of the events in Act 2 of the
play.
 Your group must know the answer to the question!

5 minutes

2. Must be an analysis question.
3. Must be an evaluation question.

5 minutes
