Quilting Care Patterns - Remaking Our Social Fabric
This exploratory project uses quilting as a metaphor and a means of reflecting on and reimagining the social fabric of care in society. Through a process of critical making, an interactive exhibition and quilting workshops, an inquiry is undertaken into the social structures guiding our care systems. This project builds a “care pattern library” that materializes social structures into quilted patterns to cultivate collective consciousness regarding our evolving social fabric. It makes visible unjust patterns of domination that “sneak in through the backdoor” reproducing oppression in mundane, everyday caring relations. Furthermore, this project encourages an intentional enactment of social structures that work toward liberatory aims by bringing forth a broad spectrum of patterns from communities that are resisting domination in their care configurations. Through a collective quilting process, a dialogue emerges about how a multiplicity of liberatory care patterns can respectfully co-exist within a dynamic social fabric.

The Evolution of a Cosmopolitan Identity:
Transforming Culture

This essay examines the evolution of cosmopolitanism in relation to the individual and the broader
scope of society. Cosmopolitanism seeks to affect changes in cultural norms through the cultivation
of self-awareness, identity, empowerment, and agency. Coupled with education, these powerful tools
contribute to shaping a global society. Examining identity through the lens of gender roles and
patriotism, it becomes evident that identity can be fluid, and cosmopolitan values can be universally
applied. Cosmopolitanism transforms individual identity that, by extension, has the potential to
transform the cultures and societies in which individuals participate.
A core value of cosmopolitanism is that all humans have equal worth. The recognition of equality of the other begins through one’s development of self-awareness and acknowledgement of
self-worth. From here, humans can influence and shape not only their personal identities but
also, in extension, the identities of their cultures and societies. After all, from where do beliefs,
traditions, and values originate if not from human nature, imagination, and construction?
According to David Hansen (2008), “social change and, in particular, social improvement are
inconceivable without individual response, imagination, and action” (p. 21). In agreement with
Hansen’s assessment, this essay illustrates how a combination of self-awareness, education,
empowerment, and agency provides a framework for the evolution of identity and social change.
Cosmopolitanism indicates “a way of being in the world, a way of constructing an identity for
oneself that is different from, and arguably opposed to, the idea of belonging to or devotion to or
immersion in a particular culture.” (Waldron, 2000, p. 1). A cosmopolitan sensibility reflects an
emotional or spiritual process of evolution. Viewed as transformational practice, cosmopolitanism
appreciates identity and culture as fluid concepts. Such fluidity creates power to transform the
relationship between the self and other and leads to the potential to affect change within the
broader scope of society.
Self-awareness proves a challenge to cultivate but is a primary component in the evolution of
an inclusive perspective. It is linked to self-identity, and together these concepts illustrate the
process of becoming or being cosmopolitan. An assumption made about self-identity is that it is
a static label or defined description of an individual. Jason Hill (2000) raises concerns about the
idea of a fixed identity:

The Symbolic interactionism emphasizes how individuals shape and are shaped by society through daily interactions. This theory posits that people create and derive meaning from symbols and languange during these interactions. The functionalist perspective sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability.

The Structural Functionalist explain that poverty and inequality serve a beneficial function for society in general, as the division of labor requires everyone to play a role, even undesirable ones. (Davis & Moore, 1945) Functionalism According to Karl Marx's conflict theory, poverty is a result of the uneven distribution of income and resources. Conflict theory Symbolic interactionalists believe that those in poverty exist because they were unable to identify opportunities or connect with individuals that could connect them to a better standard of living.
