Overview
Dementia is considered one of the most inhibiting health conditions worldwide, and with an increasing average population age it is
growing more significant to provide techniques that will assist in the care of those affected by the illness. The majority of the aid
elderly people receive is from their families, however there are still a surprisingly small number of tools available to carers to support
this shift in care giving, especially tools designed to aid the carer’s psychological wellbeing. I am working closely with the Psychology
department throughout my project in order to evaluate my app and achieve the main aim of the project. The end desire is that the app
will promote a positive outlook on life and a healthy lifestyle for the family carers who may need a helping hand.
Areas Of Resilience Building
Overall, I have identified four main areas that I feel I can utilize in my app to try and create more
resilience in a family carer. These are:
Live- The user needs to take an active participation in their life and do things that will promote
their importance, and therefore their quality of life. This will leave them feeling like they have
increased ability to cope with any situation and will also leave them feeling connected with
society.
Chat- The user must have the ability to talk to like minded carers, this will provide a platform for
experiences to be shared meaning the user will not feel isolated. The user will also have the
opportunity to divulge their expertise, leaving them feeling more valued and competent.
Support-The user should be made aware of what support is available to them leaving them
more likely to manage.
Learn-The user should be able to find information on dementia to extend their knowledge and
therefore make them feel more of an expert in this field. This should help with the carers
confidence that they are doing their job correctly.
How a User Is Assessed
Once a user has registered onto the application, they will be asked to complete 16
psychological questions from an Assessment Database (4 from each resilience
building category). The user will answer questions by inputting an integer that is
related to a Likert scale. The home screen will then display a colour relating to a
traffic light system. This is so the user can determine which area of their life they
need to concentrate on in order to improve their resilience. The user can view
options to improve these by clicking the circles on the main screen.
Score Boundaries:
Personalised Notification System
Each user will have a persuasion profile assigned to them. The persuasion profile will store what area of resilience the user has scored
lowest in for their latest assessment, as well as what influence technique has the greatest success rating for that user. The user will be
sent a notification at the time that has been specified by either their changing of the notification setting or by the default time set by the
program. This notification will be a positive message concerning an activity the user could try to increase their resilience in their lowest
scoring area. The user can add the activity to their calendar from the notification by clicking on an “add” button within the frame. The
system will record when a user adds an activity to their list and record what persuasive language technique it was that encouraged the
user to do so. Once a user has an outstanding method of influence that works for them, the system will tailor the messages to always
come from this source. If a user does not add activities from the notification process for a period of one week, the system will then
randomly select another influence technique to try.
