2. Introduction
• A cum laude graduate of Princeton University, Benjamin Spacapan is
pursuing a law degree at Harvard Law School and a master of business
administration at Harvard Business School. In the past, Benjamin
Spacapan has balanced academic responsibilities with volunteer work
for organizations such as Best Buddies and Cabrini Connections, now
called the Chicago Tutoring Connection.
Established in 1922 and recognized by Chicago's Department of Family
and Support Services as the city’s top mentoring service, the Chicago
Tutoring Connection pairs students from 7th to 12th grade with adult
mentors who help them set and work toward academic goals.
Volunteers meet with students weekly throughout the school year,
providing guidance on academic as well as personal topics. Students are
positively motivated through a system that awards them points when
they meet program expectations. When they graduate from the
program, they receive 10 cents for every point they earned. Since its
establishment, more than 700 students have spent at least a year with
the Chicago Tutoring Connection, and 90 percent of them continue on
to college, a training program, or the military.
