Portuguese Explorers of the 15 th -16 th Centuries By: Carly Reed
Ferdinand Magellan Magellan was the first to go around the world (1519-1522) They were able to learn a lot about the earth Additionally, the discovery of the Strait of Magellan provided opportunities for many more expeditions Magellan was killed during a battle with some Philippine natives in 1521 before they were able to finish the expedition
Prince Henry the Navigator Lifetime: 1394-1460 Although Prince Henry never actually went on an expedition, he financed and sent out over 50 He also established a School of Navigation, in which students learned to navigate and to not to be scared of sailing south, where they once believed monsters lived Accomplishments of the voyages he organized: discovery of a route to India from Europe; charting the western African coast; colonization of islands, etc.
Vasco da Gama Lifetime: 1460-1524 Although Dias had already discovered Cape of Good Hope, da Gama was first to go around it to India No one believed the Atlantic connected to the Indian ocean until da Gama’s voyage Increased trade was established with India after this voyage Titled “Admiral of the Sea of India” Expedition dates: 1497-1499
Pedro Alvares Cabral Cabral claimed Brazil for Portugal in 1500 This is important because it helped expand Portugal’s territories They had meant to sail to India, but got off course and got to Brazil After stopping there for awhile, some of the ships in the voyage continued on to India Dias also commanded da Gama’s and Dias’ expeditions to India and Brazil
Bartolomeu Dias Dias discovered Cape of Good Hope and a sea route around Africa to India in 1488 He never actually made it to India it was significant because his discovery made it possible for other explorers, such as da Gama, to travel along this route, because they now knew India could be reached by going around Africa Good route for trade
