This document contains a portfolio of form design work by Hoai Anh Phan. It includes 6 projects from 2012-2016 ranging from furniture to facade and retail design. The portfolio emphasizes form as the essence of design and shows how the designer draws inspiration from nature, solves technical problems, and applies concepts like yin yang and metamorphosis. It also outlines the designer's philosophy and practical drafting experience at Lendlease renovating kitchens and bathrooms in 2016.

The design was inspired by a panoramic
view of a river which brings all sort of life
activities together and creates a harmony
environment for all the livings. This panoramic
view was then turned into a design concept that
represents such view in a flowing form that pulls
together organically all the required
functionalities, forms and technologies.
“Form and Function should be one and join in a spiritual union” Frank Lloyd Wright
Flowing like a river......
The Magnet - Submitter ID: S-14-2030
5. FURNITURE PROJECT - BATHROOM VANITY DESIGN
The vanity is called “The Magnet”. It is designed in a
dynamic flow form that breathes life into dry functions.
It flows smoothly from the toilet to the basin, sets them both in
an equator-like stream which creates an ergonomic
functionality between the two.
The Magnet is created by different forms of triangular
geometries which join together and eventually, everything
is merged into one flow, creating an aesthetically pleasing
design.
6. COMMERCIAL BUILDING - ENTRANCE REDESIGN
EXISTING ENTRANCE VIEW
Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.
James Cash Penney
NATURE AS INSPIRATION
Design Concept
Inspired by the perception in which the union of small trees
would withstand any force. Such perception was articulated
into the concept of growth that functions as muptiple trunks
that grow and cling onto each other lifting up the base
throughout the ground to second floor of the building for a
proud feeling cloaking the form. On the other hand, the
design should not only look good but also feel good.
Objective
The intended approach is to design an entrance that provides a
welcoming atmosphere and form a sturdy base for the
whole building. The design also aims to increase the instrumential
values for the building’s leasing plan for any commercial purpose
in the future.
7. RESIDENTIAL PROJECT: FACADE DESIGN
Hanoi’s Way of Living as Inspiration
Street-Sofa Housing is the term coiled by
Japanese architectural reviewer in reference to the type
of housing in the Ha Noi Old Quarter which has played
a major role in shaping the unique communal culture
of Ha Noi people in this modern day. This was the
inspiration to my conceptual perception of the design
8. RESIDENTIAL PROJECT: FACADE DESIGN
Design Objective
I was asked to solve the “small-area” problem for the design of
the facace for this small block house for a family of four in Ha Noi,
Vietnam. My design approach was set in the context of
“Form follow function.” With the ideas of having
aesthetics as a bonus and bring-theinside-out windows
that also act as doors to external bacolnies.
9. DESIGN AS PROBLEM SOLVING
I was approached and asked to redesign the facade for
this small block housing in Da Nang, Vietnam. As soon
as i identified one of the main problems of the existing
facade was that it faces the West directly, i came up with
the idea of pushing the facade back and creating another
facade for the external.Preliminary SKetch

RESIDENTIAL PROJECT: FACADE REDESIGN
10. PROJECT STATEMENT:
Making decision on using block bricks to create the
form the external facade for cost effectiveness and Vietnamese
cultural construction. The square pattern was repeatedly used to pro-
vide a consistently look for aesthetics of the design. The external
facade acts as a screen to shield off the melting sunlight coming directly
from the West. Together with the internal facade, it forms a shaft for hot
air circulation keeping the interior of the house coolly perferable.

11. CONCEPTUAL PROJECT: METAMORPHOSIS & ITS DEVELOPMENT
CONCEPTUAL CONTEXT
My first acquaintance with the concept of morphing was in the major
project in the undergraduate of the Bachelor of Interior Design. Ever
since i have been fascinated by the process of changing form
as observed in the metamorphosis phenomena.
Metamorphosis “Look deeper into NATURE, you will understand everything better.”
Einstein
Conceptualization & Rationalization
To my rationalization of the phenonmenon, it can be generalized as
“Explosive moment of emotion in motion” that led me
to verifying the concept by breaking the chicken egg against the floor
to express such perception of the concept. This experiment helps
generating the conceptual sketches for the project.

12. FASHION RETAIL STORE: APPLICATION OF MORPHING
PROJECT STATEMENT:
My design approach to solving the
requirements of this Fashion Retail is to ARTICULATE
the Function of Morphing in generalization of
“Form & Function are one and the same”.
This helps generating the forms that satisfy the
functions of this project.
Selected Site: Sydney Convention Center

13. CONCEPTUAL PROJECT: METAMORPHOSIS & ITS DEVELOPMENT
Context
Finishing the Bachelor Degree with a profound interest in the concept of Morphology. I
decided to study further into the concept of change in the Master Degree. With the advise
of my academic supervisor, i researched into the concept of “Yi Jing”; A Chinese
comprehensive concept of change in which the whole Chinese culture rooted. At the end
of my research, i proposed a theory of morphing alternatives in my dissertation, and that
could be conclusively generalized as
“The more it changes,
The more it is the same.”
Yin YangDiagram of System of Change
Concept Proposal
The change in Yin Yang is more complex and more comprehensive.
It is a produce and reproduce process of change.
Generally, its ultimate objective is to find the harmony created
by the dualistic interaction of Yin and Yang.
Conceptual Sketch; “The more it changes the more it is the same”
14. FASHION RETAIL STORE: APPLICATION OF YIN YANG MORPHING
Concept Statement
The project is a redesign of the typology that i did previously in my Bachelor
design. In this design approach, the concept generated the forms out of the
perception of the recurrence of time & space with an aim to achieve
the harmony out of the chaotic motion. The context behind the project’s
requirements is to create a form that attributed to the aesthetics of the existing
height while allowing an unobstructed view throughout the design. The
contrast but union between the solid forms and hollow forms helps creating
a harmony for the whole.
