Audience: Consider your subject matter, then decide who would be the best or most likely
audience for such a topic. Imagine that your audience includes experts in the topic you are
discussing. Your tone and voice should be appropriate for someone addressing experts in the
field. For instance, if you chose to discuss how the concerns of farmers weigh into the decisions
of politicians, you might consider your audience to be farmers as a whole and others in the
agricultural industry. On the other hand, you might want to consider politicians or the electorate
as your audience. Determining your audience depends on who you think needs to hear your
report. It is possible that once you get into the revision process, your perception of the
appropriate audience may change. And ideally, your overall thesis should evolve as you gather
evidence and revise your essay.
Your Assignment: The goal of this assignment is to choose a topic of personal interest, then
utilize the library database and other credible sources to provide a comprehensive, objective
analysis of the research material. You will start your research very broad, and then become more
specific as you locate sources. Determine your thesis statement based on the exercises and
research done prior to this assignment. Your thesis should present an original viewpoint on your
subject matter. This is not an argumentative or persuasive essay. You will utilize and interpret
sources to support your analysis of the topic. Choose sources that provide supporting facts,
definitions, or anecdotes. You should not use sources to make your point for you. Present your
viewpoint without personal bias or emotional language, but instead with logical reasoning. Your
essay must utilize at least 3 academic/scholarly sources. Other sources may be included, but
they will not count toward the 3 sources required by the assignment, and they must be credible.
You must utilize at least 3 quotations in your essay. Block quotes are highly discouraged.
Format: MLA or APA format, Times New Roman, 12-point font, one-inch margins, double
spaced. Number your pages and include a header at the top left corner of the page with your
name, my name, the class name, and the date. Provide a Works Cited page for any and all
sources referenced (not included in page count). Keep in mind that there are proper ways of

• Task: The multiple-source essay asks you to synthesize the arguments of at least 10
sources
• Length: 2000-3000 words
• Format: APA
• Sources: a total of at least 10 sources, all of which should be from scholarly journals or
credible trade journals. You should find your sources through library searches.
o If you cite sources from websites or popular journals, these sources should be in
addition to the 10 sources you have cited from scholarly or trade journals.
• Topic: Please use the same topic that you used for writing assignment #3. It is
recommended that you focus on or expand on the essay that you wrote for writing
assignment #3. You will continue with the topic you have selected and will conduct
additional searches in the library databases, hopefully focus the topic more, and
determine the 10 or more sources to use in this essay.
• Integration of Sources: At least eight sources must be cited in the body of the essay.
You may cite sources in your introduction to help you define terms, and you may cite
sources in your conclusion to help you direct the reader to further inquiry. However, the
body of the essay should synthesize at least eight sources.
Strategies in Developing the Topic for this Essay
Up to this point in the semester, you have completed an annotated bibliography. You have also
incorporated and synthesized four sources into writing assignment #2 and six sources into
writing assignment #3. The work you have completed for these assignments provides a solid
foundation for writing assignment #4. In this assignment you will synthesize the ideas of at least
10 sources in a synthesis essay, or literature review.
For your annotated bibliography, you selected a topic based on your interests and, possibly, your
major. You constructed a list of five references and summarized and critically analyzed them in
150-200 words each. You then completed the four-source essay and the six-source essay.
Through this process, you may have seen patterns in the scholarly literature in the topic on which
you conducted research. For example, consider the following examples:
•You may have researched studies in criminal justice and found that there are varying
opinions on how to respond to criminal behavior among youth.
•You may have researched studies in psychology and found that counseling strategies
for victims of domestic abuse tend to fall into four categories.

Background
Throughout this course, we have been examining how audiences are persuaded by various styles, rhetorical appeals, and ways of presenting information based on their specific needs and expectations. For this final major component of the semester, you will be taking the argument of your research paper and restructuring in a creative and purposeful way for a new audience.
How to Approach the Assignment
1. Audience. Consider your research paper argument. Who would benefit from knowing the information you learned in your research? Choose a new audience for your focus.
2. Purpose. Once you have your audience in mind, what purpose do you have in connecting with them? What information from your research do you want them to know and what would you encourage them to do with it?
3. Genre. Choose a medium for presenting your research argument to your audience.
How you choose to restructure your argument is a vital part of this assignment.
Make sure the genre you choose has value and purpose for the audience.
Possible public pieces include: brochure, public service announcement, commercial, magazine article, newspaper editorial, letter, podcast, original poetry/music, video, poster presentation, etc. Creativity is encouraged as long as it thoughtfully conveys your argument! 4. Create. Compose/create a high quality, professional product. Any scripts, transcripts, or other written components should accompany the actual product. Documents, videos, and images will be uploaded to Blackboard.

You will need to discuss what your argument is, the audience you chose, and how your public piece connects effectively with the audience.
