Renowned pagoda groups like Base of Quintal and Umbrella achieved success in the 1980s and 1990s under the leadership of Arlindo Cross. Zeca Pagodinho was a major icon of pagoda, composing works that blended authentic pagoda styles like classic high-pagoda and romantic pagoda. In the late 1990s, Black Race emerged representing a college-style pagoda genre. Over time, the term "pagode" became synonymous with samba as sambistas used this name for their works and pagodas.
