Islam developed in the 7th century Middle East. Muslims believe Muhammad was the prophet of Islam and received messages from the archangel Gabriel. The five pillars of Islam are the basic acts required of Muslims which include the shahadah, daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, alms-giving, and the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime. Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 AD, married Khadija and worked as a caravan manager before receiving revelations from Gabriel and founding Islam.
