advertisements, and movies.
Why is this artist's work considered Pop Art?
It's considered Pop Art because he uses popular culture objects and reframes them to make them art. The majority of the times he uses comic pictures
and uses stencils to give them a dotted look.
Describe some of his art:
Roy Lichtenstein paintings are comics. You can see how it is all dotted. As well, you can see how everything is so detailed. In the second image, you
can see that he used humor by changing the context and words.

Andy Warhol: The Notion Of Pop Art
The Pop Art movement has always been scrutinised for its legitimacy in the traditional Art world. The notion of Pop Art, in the 1960's, seemed to some
critics to be simple appropriation, taking an idea from someone else and then making it their own by altering or decontextualizing it. Traditional artists,
art collectors and appreciators, found this new challenge of separating High Art from Low Culture difficult with the avant–garde approach taken by Pop
Artists like Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. This essay will explore the origins of Pop Art and its clashes with High Art and its
stereotypes. Looking at the pioneers of Pop Art, Andy Warhol with his works "Campbell's Soup Cans" and "Untitled from Marilyn Monroe

"The twin questions that reverberate throughout the episode: What is art? Who is an artist?" , undeniably applies to the foundations of the Pop
Art movement. The episode shows Homer, often portrayed as the 'typical idiot American' father, failing to build a DIY barbeque, in his rage he
disfigures the project even further and decides to get rid of it. In doing so he coincidently bumps into an art gallery owner who states she would
like to exhibit his so called 'Art' Homer replies, "This isn't art. It's just a barbecue that pushed me too far" . When seeing the art show his wife
Marge, who aspired to be an artist in high school, fails to come to terms with the fact that this could be called 'Art' "I just can't believe people are
paying millions of dollars for something some hillbilly dug out of the trash" . Homer sells a piece and the exhibitioner proclaims "Congratulations,
Homer. You're now a professional artist" . His second show is a complete and utter failure. As he looks for inspiration and to pin point where he went
wrong he visits an art gallery. There he examines the works of Picasso, Claes Oldenburg and Andy Warhol. On seeing Warhol's painting of the can of
Campbell's soup Homer exclaims, "These guys are geniuses. I could never think of something like soup." . This statement illustrates the mixture of
simplicity and complexity of Pop Art. The episode ends with Homer keeping trying to one up himself with his art and

Pop Art Movement Essay
The Pop Art Movement was one of the biggest visual art movements of the 20th century. Therefore it is extremely significant. Pop Art is simply an
abbreviation for popular art work. Numerous artists such as such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and Claes Oldenburg started
this phenomenal movement form the 1950's and onwards. It came at a time after a two decade period where abstract art was extremely popular. Pop Art

The Marilyn Diptych, along with his other famous Marilyn paintings, is based on a 1953 publicity photograph for the film 'Niagara'. He produced
this amazing piece of art just a couple of weeks after her death. He was genuinely amazed by her. He wanted to show her to the world in his own
unique way. It contains fifty images of the actress, which are all based on a single publicity photograph from the film Niagara. The twenty–five
pictures on the left side of the diptych are brightly colored, while the twenty–five on the right are in black and white, and also blurred or faded. It can

movement had begun in the 60s, it was really popular and so it still has the name.

Cultural identity in terms of art is when an artist portrays a culture in their art work. I think that artists can change the way their audience thinks about
cultural identity and expression. By arranging their work in such a way that it has good use of color and designs. To change the audience's thinking
about cultural identity they can depict unity between people of different races which is tied to cultural identity. By showing unity among different
races, the artists can awaken a sense of a good community to the audience, for them to work together with people of different cultures. To change the
audience's way of thinking about expression, the author can show different types colors used at different areas on the same picture. That would make
the audience understand expression better. Once they understand it better, it will be easier to convince

Pop Art was a movement that started in Great Britain in the mid–1950s and moved to the United States in the late–19050s. Pop Art was different in that
it marked a return to representational are and hard–edge composition. In addition to this it challenged fine art traditions by including imagery from
popular culture. It is impersonal, ironic, and often a parody to emphasize the kitschy parts of culture. Pop Art was different than the Abstract
Expressionism that dominated the previous two decades. Robert Indiana put it like this,

Exhibition Analysis
The AGO exhibition for the Super Real: Pop Art from the AGO collection runs from September 2016 until the end of the year. Former curator Mario
Amaya leads this exhibition and displays the artwork in the Edmund G. Odette Gallery of the AGO. The exhibition presents a diverse array of
artwork from large silkscreen images to a cardboard burger sculpture sitting in the middle of the space. The exhibition has a small collection but has
iconic pieces that are central to the story of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. For instance, one of the crucial works shown in the gallery is Andy
Warhol's 1963 Elvis I and II silkscreen painting. As there was two Elvis' on one side with colour, then another two Elvis' on one side featured in
black and white.Elvis is in a cowboy outfit while standing in a gunslinger pose on both sides of the painting. Each panel is 82 x 82 inches and is
made from silkscreen ink, spray paint and acrylic paint. A thin and shiny golden frame surrounds the composition, which brings Warhol's piece
together. This painting is the most noticeable in the exhibition, as the contrast of one side with colour and the other with black and white draws the
viewer in. Another significant work featured in the exhibition is Claes Oldenburg's 1962 Floor Burger sculpture. The artwork appears on the floor of
the space, as it is 1.32 meters by 2.13 diameters in size. The Floor Burger is overwhelming to look at as it a something that is typically much smaller

popularity until the early 1960's. In my art class, we are in the process of drawing a product such as perfume boxes and chocolate packages in one

Pop art, better known as Abstract Expressionism, was a cynical take on the lack of artistic excitement when dealing with popular consumer goods. Pop
art originated in America and the artistic style had a very commercial–like quality to it. Initially, the public had a negative reaction to Abstract
Expressionism, many even so far as to say it was not "real" art. Pop art changed the way people thought about art and artistic styles. I drew inspiration
from artists such as Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns and illustrated a picture of Red Door by Elizabeth Arden. My artwork contains a very satirical
element to it, reminiscent of many pop art artists. I am also illustrating a consumer good in a commercial like and animated style, much like the style
of Campbell's Soup which is illustrated by Andy Warhol. After researching, Abstract Expressionism also includes large fonts and unique font styles. In
my illustration, I replicated a font evocative to the timeless classic font: Times New Roman. I combined the aspects of pop art and Abstract

One of the most recent artistic movements of our time has been the Pop Art movement. This movement was not only a change in style, but a change
in the definition of what art really is. The goal of Pop Art was to blur the lines between high culture art and the low level art that surrounds us today. It
was a blend of cultures and ideas that changed the direction of art forever. Pop Art contains a wide variety of art with different attitudes and meanings.
The actual term "Pop Art" has been attributed to Lawrence Alloway and Alison and Peter Smithson. Themes of art before this movement were often
things such as history, mythology, and morality. Pop Art focused on everyday objects and people. One of the beliefs held by the majority of the artists
in this movement was that everything is connected. They seeked to show these connections in their art by relating to popular subjects and themes. (The

Pop Art Joe Hill Essay
Pop Art is defined as art based on modern popular culture and the mass media, especially as a critical or ironic comment on traditional fine art values.
"To Americans, Pop Art was an artistic manifestation which reflected their own culture." (Elmaleh 1) Many artists or writers will take normal,
everyday things in nature, and will turn them into brighter things. This was considered to be a new movement because it was right after the war, so it
was a darker time period. Throughout the text, Joe Hill tried to convey many things with his short story about Art using his own culture and what he
knew, but I think the most obvious message that he tried to convey is emotion. The message that Joe Hill tries to convey about Art is emotion.
Throughout the text, you can see that Art becomes very attached to the narrator, as well as the other way around. The narrator stands up to the boys
who are bullying Art and says that he has "an even funner idea", rather than kicking Art onto the roof of the school, and that is to "see if he can kick
their lardy" butts "up on the roof of the school". (Page 5) You can see that before Art and Joe even begin to become friends or to know each other, Joe

change for Joe and his family, which shows that she cares for him because she is looking out for him and what is in his best interest. She told Art that
if Joe was to be put in foster care, she would adopt him and he could stay in the guest room. Mrs. Roth obviously sincerely cares for Joe if she is

Pop Art : An Art Movement
Pop Art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950's characterized by imagery from pop culture mostly on advertisements and news often using
the sense of irony. This movement was more of a cultural revolution using vibrant colors and bold graphics to represent a statement and provide an
instant meaning. It has a relation with the abstract expressionism, however it is clearer and has a comic book vibe. Pop art is not trying to confuse
you and make you analyze its meaning, on the contrary, it wants the audience to have a clear message of the daily social, political and cultural
changes occurring and how they impact society. The Philadelphia Museum of Art held the "International Pop" exhibit from February 24, 2016 through
May 15, 2016. This exhibit focused on art from 1950's to 1970's were it explored bold and thought–provoking imagery, reliving a period influenced by
social, political and cultural changes. This was a movement that crossed continents from Europe to America being distinct in every region. In this
exhibit the artwork "John Fitzgerald Kennedy" by Sergio Lombardo awaked thoughts in my mind about the power of gestures, how it conveyed an
audience and how it defines someone's personality. Sergio Lombardo, an Italian artist, portrays black and white silhouettes of politicians and leaders.

Campbell's Soup Cans as well as Warhol's famous Marilyn Monroe, (1962, Leo Castelli Gallery) are silk screened paintings based on the mass
produced. These images are often presented in a series by which Warhol repeats the picture a large number of times on the same canvas or on
separate canvases. Each image in the series is slightly different from the next one. Warhol utilizes a wide range of color from the monochrome to the
vivid and vibrant. In his Campbell Soup painting, numerous rows and columns of red and white Campbell soup cans are painted alongside each
other. They are all identical except for the flavor of the soup that is written on each can. Warhol's main aesthetic strategies were based on the fashion
industry and mass media advertising. This means that he constantly used reproduction and incessant repetition in the art work. But it was repetition
and reproduction without a message. For example, the statement В‘Black Bean' on the Campbell's soup can is meaningless when it is reproduced in
art, which is exactly how mass advertising works and Warhol wanted his artwork to have this same effect. However, Warhol's Campbell's soup did not
only function as an illustration of commercial industry and advertisement, it was an intrinsic part of Warhol's life and memories and popular culture.
For him the soup represented a feeling of being at home with family. It was what the mass media

Pop art occurred during the mid 1950s to the early 1970s. It started with four artists: andy warhol, roy lichtenstein, james rosenquist, and claes
oldenburg. All four artists took their inspiration from mass media and the pop culture of the time. The term "pop art" possibly came from several
different origins, the first used in writing attributed to lawrence alloway and alison and peter smithson, members of the independent group. In fact,
the first artwork to incorporate the word pop was created by eduardo paolozzi, a collage titled i was a richman's plaything. Andy warhol was the
figurehead of the movement, with his paintings of campbell soup cans and coca cola bottles being some of his most prevalent works. [include
campbells paintings] the gallery owner and interior designer muriel latow gave warhol the idea of painting soup cans, when she suggested to him that
he should paint objects that people use every day. He created art that was both easily recognizable but also visually stimulating. The ad imagery that
was flooding the lives of americans was part of his pop art style, making consumer goods something that many people can recognize in passing. It is
stated on theartstory.com that he recreated on canvas the experience of being in a well–stocked supermarket. He is credited with envisioning a new
type of art that glorified, and also criticized, the consumption habits of his contemporaries and consumers

  • 2. Andy Warhol: The Notion Of Pop Art The Pop Art movement has always been scrutinised for its legitimacy in the traditional Art world. The notion of Pop Art, in the 1960's, seemed to some critics to be simple appropriation, taking an idea from someone else and then making it their own by altering or decontextualizing it. Traditional artists, art collectors and appreciators, found this new challenge of separating High Art from Low Culture difficult with the avant–garde approach taken by Pop Artists like Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. This essay will explore the origins of Pop Art and its clashes with High Art and its stereotypes. Looking at the pioneers of Pop Art, Andy Warhol with his works "Campbell's Soup Cans" and "Untitled from Marilyn Monroe ...show more content... "The twin questions that reverberate throughout the episode: What is art? Who is an artist?" , undeniably applies to the foundations of the Pop Art movement. The episode shows Homer, often portrayed as the 'typical idiot American' father, failing to build a DIY barbeque, in his rage he disfigures the project even further and decides to get rid of it. In doing so he coincidently bumps into an art gallery owner who states she would like to exhibit his so called 'Art' Homer replies, "This isn't art. It's just a barbecue that pushed me too far" . When seeing the art show his wife Marge, who aspired to be an artist in high school, fails to come to terms with the fact that this could be called 'Art' "I just can't believe people are paying millions of dollars for something some hillbilly dug out of the trash" . Homer sells a piece and the exhibitioner proclaims "Congratulations, Homer. You're now a professional artist" . His second show is a complete and utter failure. As he looks for inspiration and to pin point where he went wrong he visits an art gallery. There he examines the works of Picasso, Claes Oldenburg and Andy Warhol. On seeing Warhol's painting of the can of Campbell's soup Homer exclaims, "These guys are geniuses. I could never think of something like soup." . This statement illustrates the mixture of simplicity and complexity of Pop Art. The episode ends with Homer keeping trying to one up himself with his art and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Pop artists are very originating, and their style is very acute and bright. ''pop modern style is an adaptation of a famous pop art movement popular during the 50s and 60s'' (Yuni,2006, P:51). • 4. Pop Art Movement Essay The Pop Art Movement was one of the biggest visual art movements of the 20th century. Therefore it is extremely significant. Pop Art is simply an abbreviation for popular art work. Numerous artists such as such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and Claes Oldenburg started this phenomenal movement form the 1950's and onwards. It came at a time after a two decade period where abstract art was extremely popular. Pop Art is the movement in art when artists began to create art with the subject of things that are the iconic in nature such as famous people, advertising, and movies (things that were popular at the time.) The Marilyn Diptych, along with his other famous Marilyn paintings, is based on a 1953 publicity photograph for the film 'Niagara'. He produced this amazing piece of art just a couple of weeks after her death. He was genuinely amazed by her. He wanted to show her to the world in his own unique way. It contains fifty images of the actress, which are all based on a single publicity photograph from the film Niagara. The twenty–five pictures on the left side of the diptych are brightly colored, while the twenty–five on the right are in black and white, and also blurred or faded. It can be found in Tate, Liverpool. It was a very significant piece of art at the time. Roy Lichtenstein developed the comic strip. His style was always the same: black outlines, bold colors and tones rendered by Benday dots (a method of printing tones in comic books from the 1950's and 60's). The whole idea behind them was making every day ordinary objects to look more attractive by changing the color schemes to brighter ones. Pop artists use vibrant and complementary colors to make them stand out. When the movement had begun in the 60s, it was really popular and so it still has the name. Cultural identity in terms of art is when an artist portrays a culture in their art work. I think that artists can change the way their audience thinks about cultural identity and expression. By arranging their work in such a way that it has good use of color and designs. To change the audience's thinking about cultural identity they can depict unity between people of different races which is tied to cultural identity. By showing unity among different races, the artists can awaken a sense of a good community to the audience, for them to work together with people of different cultures. To change the audience's way of thinking about expression, the author can show different types colors used at different areas on the same picture. That would make the audience understand expression better. Once they understand it better, it will be easier to convince Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Pop Art Research Paper Pop Art was a movement that started in Great Britain in the mid–1950s and moved to the United States in the late–19050s. Pop Art was different in that it marked a return to representational are and hard–edge composition. In addition to this it challenged fine art traditions by including imagery from popular culture. It is impersonal, ironic, and often a parody to emphasize the kitschy parts of culture. Pop Art was different than the Abstract Expressionism that dominated the previous two decades. Robert Indiana put it like this, "Pop is everything art hasn't been for the last two decades. • 7. Exhibition Analysis The AGO exhibition for the Super Real: Pop Art from the AGO collection runs from September 2016 until the end of the year. Former curator Mario Amaya leads this exhibition and displays the artwork in the Edmund G. Odette Gallery of the AGO. The exhibition presents a diverse array of artwork from large silkscreen images to a cardboard burger sculpture sitting in the middle of the space. The exhibition has a small collection but has iconic pieces that are central to the story of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. For instance, one of the crucial works shown in the gallery is Andy Warhol's 1963 Elvis I and II silkscreen painting. As there was two Elvis' on one side with colour, then another two Elvis' on one side featured in black and white.Elvis is in a cowboy outfit while standing in a gunslinger pose on both sides of the painting. Each panel is 82 x 82 inches and is made from silkscreen ink, spray paint and acrylic paint. A thin and shiny golden frame surrounds the composition, which brings Warhol's piece together. This painting is the most noticeable in the exhibition, as the contrast of one side with colour and the other with black and white draws the viewer in. Another significant work featured in the exhibition is Claes Oldenburg's 1962 Floor Burger sculpture. The artwork appears on the floor of the space, as it is 1.32 meters by 2.13 diameters in size. The Floor Burger is overwhelming to look at as it a something that is typically much smaller Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Pop Art Research Paper For the general population, popular art, better known as pop art, goes unnoticed. The large printed words on your protein shake or the animated leprechaun on cereal boxes have become modern society's norm. However, pop art did not come into play until the mid–1900's and did not gain its popularity until the early 1960's. In my art class, we are in the process of drawing a product such as perfume boxes and chocolate packages in one point perspective. Popular art is any type of art that is inspired by popular culture, ideas, and comments. Illustrating objects such as perfume boxes is the perfect example of pop art. Pop art, better known as Abstract Expressionism, was a cynical take on the lack of artistic excitement when dealing with popular consumer goods. Pop art originated in America and the artistic style had a very commercial–like quality to it. Initially, the public had a negative reaction to Abstract Expressionism, many even so far as to say it was not "real" art. Pop art changed the way people thought about art and artistic styles. I drew inspiration from artists such as Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns and illustrated a picture of Red Door by Elizabeth Arden. My artwork contains a very satirical element to it, reminiscent of many pop art artists. I am also illustrating a consumer good in a commercial like and animated style, much like the style of Campbell's Soup which is illustrated by Andy Warhol. After researching, Abstract Expressionism also includes large fonts and unique font styles. In my illustration, I replicated a font evocative to the timeless classic font: Times New Roman. Pop art, which is the subject of the exhibit, rose to prominence in Great Britain through the International Group in the late 1950s. It was an art movement that is categorized as utilizing popular culture and challenging high, intellectual art that was the prominent from past decades. After analyzing the work, the viewer realizes that the the woman is Vietnamese. The title, who is not B.B., is a criticism of popular culture again through a depiction of a woman who is clearly suffering from the ongoing Vietnam War, which was at its climax when this piece was created. The title is criticizing popular culture because this woman should be receiving attention instead of cultures devotion to idolizing figures like "B.B" or Brigitte Bardot. This work is particularly interesting because it is yet another example of Brazilian artists' utilization of pop art to make a critical statement regarding its own influence on life and culture. It is a work which calls into question the values of society and places a higher priority on beautiful celebrities and idolizing figures, rather than calling attention to the atrocities of war and the affects it has on innocent civilians. • 10. Pop Art Research Paper One of the most recent artistic movements of our time has been the Pop Art movement. This movement was not only a change in style, but a change in the definition of what art really is. The goal of Pop Art was to blur the lines between high culture art and the low level art that surrounds us today. It was a blend of cultures and ideas that changed the direction of art forever. Pop Art contains a wide variety of art with different attitudes and meanings. The actual term "Pop Art" has been attributed to Lawrence Alloway and Alison and Peter Smithson. Themes of art before this movement were often things such as history, mythology, and morality. Pop Art focused on everyday objects and people. One of the beliefs held by the majority of the artists in this movement was that everything is connected. They seeked to show these connections in their art by relating to popular subjects and themes. (The Art Story)...show more content... It began as early as the mid–1950s and ended in the late 1970s. Pop Art embraced large scale manufacturing and the media boom taking place at this time. These artists were fascinated by the development going through the world and they supported rapid industrialization and wanted to show this in their artwork. • 11. Pop Art Joe Hill Essay Pop Art is defined as art based on modern popular culture and the mass media, especially as a critical or ironic comment on traditional fine art values. "To Americans, Pop Art was an artistic manifestation which reflected their own culture." (Elmaleh 1) Many artists or writers will take normal, everyday things in nature, and will turn them into brighter things. This was considered to be a new movement because it was right after the war, so it was a darker time period. Throughout the text, Joe Hill tried to convey many things with his short story about Art using his own culture and what he knew, but I think the most obvious message that he tried to convey is emotion. The message that Joe Hill tries to convey about Art is emotion. Throughout the text, you can see that Art becomes very attached to the narrator, as well as the other way around. The narrator stands up to the boys who are bullying Art and says that he has "an even funner idea", rather than kicking Art onto the roof of the school, and that is to "see if he can kick their lardy" butts "up on the roof of the school". (Page 5) You can see that before Art and Joe even begin to become friends or to know each other, Joe is already attaching to Art by standing up for him. He is...show more content... (Page 9) Mrs. Roth thinks that religion could make a change for Joe and his family, which shows that she cares for him because she is looking out for him and what is in his best interest. She told Art that if Joe was to be put in foster care, she would adopt him and he could stay in the guest room. • 12. Pop Art : An Art Movement Pop Art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950's characterized by imagery from pop culture mostly on advertisements and news often using the sense of irony. This movement was more of a cultural revolution using vibrant colors and bold graphics to represent a statement and provide an instant meaning. It has a relation with the abstract expressionism, however it is clearer and has a comic book vibe. Pop art is not trying to confuse you and make you analyze its meaning, on the contrary, it wants the audience to have a clear message of the daily social, political and cultural changes occurring and how they impact society. The Philadelphia Museum of Art held the "International Pop" exhibit from February 24, 2016 through May 15, 2016. This exhibit focused on art from 1950's to 1970's were it explored bold and thought–provoking imagery, reliving a period influenced by social, political and cultural changes. This was a movement that crossed continents from Europe to America being distinct in every region. In this exhibit the artwork "John Fitzgerald Kennedy" by Sergio Lombardo awaked thoughts in my mind about the power of gestures, how it conveyed an audience and how it defines someone's personality. Sergio Lombardo, an Italian artist, portrays black and white silhouettes of politicians and leaders. He re–created an immortal image of authoritative postures, and formal clothing of the figures, which preserve the unique presence of iconic leaders. Centre your discussion on one or two examples each of the work of the following artists: Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, James Rosenquist. Pop Art is one of the major art movements of the Twentieth Century. Characterized by themes and techniques drawn from mass culture such as advertising and comic books, pop art is widely interpreted as a reaction to the ideas of abstract expressionism which preceded Pop in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The decade of the 1960s was perhaps one of the most provocative, in terms of culture, politics and philosophy, of the 20th century. The amazing growth that...show more content... Campbell's Soup Cans as well as Warhol's famous Marilyn Monroe, (1962, Leo Castelli Gallery) are silk screened paintings based on the mass produced. These images are often presented in a series by which Warhol repeats the picture a large number of times on the same canvas or on separate canvases. Each image in the series is slightly different from the next one. Warhol utilizes a wide range of color from the monochrome to the vivid and vibrant. In his Campbell Soup painting, numerous rows and columns of red and white Campbell soup cans are painted alongside each other. They are all identical except for the flavor of the soup that is written on each can. Warhol's main aesthetic strategies were based on the fashion industry and mass media advertising. This means that he constantly used reproduction and incessant repetition in the art work. But it was repetition and reproduction without a message. For example, the statement В‘Black Bean' on the Campbell's soup can is meaningless when it is reproduced in art, which is exactly how mass advertising works and Warhol wanted his artwork to have this same effect. However, Warhol's Campbell's soup did not only function as an illustration of commercial industry and advertisement, it was an intrinsic part of Warhol's life and memories and popular culture. For him the soup represented a feeling of being at home with family. It was what the mass media Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. The Pop Art Movement Essay The Pop Art Movement Pop art got its name from Lawrence Alloway, who was a British art critic in 1950's. The name "Pop Art" reflected on the "familiar imagery of the contemporary urban environment" (kleiner, 981). This art form was popular for its bold and simple looks plus its bright and vibrant colors. An example of this type of art is the oil painting done by Andy Warhol, "Marilyn Diptych" (Warhol, Marilyn Diptych) in 1962. The Pop art movement became known in the mid–1950 and continued as main type of art form until the late 1960's.
