POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATION 4
How does Police Use of Deadly Force Impact Police-
Community Relation?
Student’s Name
Running head: POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATION
Institution
Thesis statement
Many scholars who have been studying the relationships
between the police and the community have found it difficult to
explain how these two parties will work together effectively.
The main reason is, although the community might collaborate
with the community when it comes to issues of crime; the
community sometimes gets into a loggerhead with the police
during activities such as protests. During protests, the police
sometimes use excessive force to disperse rowdy people holding
the protest. Therefore, the main question that is going to be
answered by the paper is, how does police use of deadly force
impact the police-community relation?
Hypothesis
The relationship between the police and the community is going
to be worsened further if the police use excessive force against
them. The main reason for this claim is, direct force harms
innocent people and could also lead to the death of people. It
does not give the public the chance to air their opinions that
violate their basic human rights. When excessive force is used
in the fight against crime, many innocent people may be injured
in the process and also their privacy rights may be violated. One
of the solutions to this problem is to come up with strict
policies that guide how the police relate to the public and use of
excessive force should be prohibited at all times. These policies
would solve the problem as the police force would be bound by
those laws and would not use excessive force against the public
that would in turn boost the community's trust in the police
force. This solution is being researched upon and will be
improved as time goes by improving its effectiveness in
improving the relationship between the public and the police
force.
Applicable Resources
National Institute of Justice. (2012). Police Use of Force.
The article explains what excessive force is in detail. It explains
that the police is allowed by the law to use some levels of force
when suspects resist arrest. Excessive force is forbidden, and
injured suspects are supposed to be treated and their relatives
informed. The article also explains some of the factors that may
affect how police use excess force. Some of the factors are the
technology used, the relationship between the police and
people, the mandates of those officers and the laws that govern
how police use force.
Bureau of Justice Statistics. Use of Force.
This article gives the correct figures of how many times
excessive force was used in the United States. The statistics
indicate that the use of excessive force has reduced with time,
and it's still continuing to reduce as time goes by. The reduction
in the use of excessive force has been attributed to improved
relations between the public and the police force. The numbers
also indicate that the public is becoming more and more
confident with time.
Wihbey, J. (2014). Excessive or reasonable force by police?
Research on law enforcement and racial conflict in the wake of
Ferguson.
This particular article investigates how the police use excessive
force to specific groups of people. According to the statistics
given, most of the crime suspects were young black people and
the police was more likely to use excessive upon them than their
white counterparts. However, the numbers are also decreasing
as the public is becoming more and more confident in the police
force.
LawInfo. What to do if Police Use Excessive Force?
The article is addressed to the public, and it gives them
information on how to handle incidences of excessive force. The
article aims at protecting the people by educating them on how
to handle the issue that would lead to the punishment of
offenders.
Wallentine K. (2007). How to ensure the use of force is
“reasonable and necessary” and avoid claims of excessive force.
This article explains what excessive force is, and also defines
the limits of force. The article defines these terms by referring
to the Constitution and gives examples of situations where
excessive force can be used.
Annotated Bibliography
(This represents your next “level 1 heading”)
Here you will summarize each of the 5 sources that you have
found and listed in IP # 1 that are most relevant and best
support your purpose statement. So what you are summarizing is
the basic information or content from these 5 sources – listing
each one separately and utilizing the APA 6th ed Annotated Bib
sample in learning materials. These are in essence “abstracts”
for each source.

POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATION 4How does Police Use of De.docx

  • 1. POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATION 4 How does Police Use of Deadly Force Impact Police- Community Relation? Student’s Name Running head: POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATION Institution Thesis statement Many scholars who have been studying the relationships between the police and the community have found it difficult to explain how these two parties will work together effectively. The main reason is, although the community might collaborate with the community when it comes to issues of crime; the community sometimes gets into a loggerhead with the police during activities such as protests. During protests, the police sometimes use excessive force to disperse rowdy people holding the protest. Therefore, the main question that is going to be answered by the paper is, how does police use of deadly force impact the police-community relation? Hypothesis The relationship between the police and the community is going to be worsened further if the police use excessive force against them. The main reason for this claim is, direct force harms innocent people and could also lead to the death of people. It does not give the public the chance to air their opinions that violate their basic human rights. When excessive force is used in the fight against crime, many innocent people may be injured in the process and also their privacy rights may be violated. One of the solutions to this problem is to come up with strict policies that guide how the police relate to the public and use of
  • 2. excessive force should be prohibited at all times. These policies would solve the problem as the police force would be bound by those laws and would not use excessive force against the public that would in turn boost the community's trust in the police force. This solution is being researched upon and will be improved as time goes by improving its effectiveness in improving the relationship between the public and the police force. Applicable Resources National Institute of Justice. (2012). Police Use of Force. The article explains what excessive force is in detail. It explains that the police is allowed by the law to use some levels of force when suspects resist arrest. Excessive force is forbidden, and injured suspects are supposed to be treated and their relatives informed. The article also explains some of the factors that may affect how police use excess force. Some of the factors are the technology used, the relationship between the police and people, the mandates of those officers and the laws that govern how police use force. Bureau of Justice Statistics. Use of Force. This article gives the correct figures of how many times excessive force was used in the United States. The statistics indicate that the use of excessive force has reduced with time, and it's still continuing to reduce as time goes by. The reduction in the use of excessive force has been attributed to improved relations between the public and the police force. The numbers also indicate that the public is becoming more and more confident with time. Wihbey, J. (2014). Excessive or reasonable force by police? Research on law enforcement and racial conflict in the wake of Ferguson. This particular article investigates how the police use excessive force to specific groups of people.
