Researchers analyzed large datasets on diet, physical activity, and stress to understand lifestyle habits and identify effective ways to promote healthy changes. One dataset contained 8 million photos of meals taken by mobile users to receive peer feedback on healthiness, which was found to be as accurate as experts. Another dataset contained heartbeat variations for 30,000 people, allowing analysis of actual exercise levels compared to recommendations. The goal is to combine such data insights to better understand morbidity and performance, and evaluate programs to encourage healthy lifestyles.
Issues in experimental design for the study of atypical language developme...David Saldaña Sage
The document discusses issues in experimental design for studying atypical language development. It covers the differences between controlled experiments, field experiments, and natural experiments. Controlled experiments allow for precise control but lack generalizability, while field and natural experiments are more reflective of real life but have less control. The document also addresses within-subject repeated measures designs versus between-group independent measures designs. It notes the importance of counterbalancing to control for order effects. Additional topics covered include matching groups on relevant variables, checking the distribution of data to select appropriate statistical tests, and keeping thorough lab notes.
This document provides a list of props required for a scene, including Dr Dre headphones for a character named Duke, a black hoodie, student folders, a college handbook, and a college map. The props aim to set the scene and portray characters, with the folders, handbook and map suggesting the scene takes place on a college campus. Overall, the document outlines the visual elements and props needed to bring a scene to life.

Suomalaisten näkemyksiä terveysalan tutkimustyöstä ja kansalaisten terveystie...Sitra / Hyvinvointi
Lääketeollisuus ry, Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitos sekä Sitra selvittivät keväällä 2018 tuhannen suomalaisen näkemyksiä Suomessa tehtävästä terveysalan tutkimuksesta. Kyselyn toteutti Kantar TNS. Vastaajat edustavat 15-74-vuotiasta väestöä. Kyselyn virhemarginaali on noin 3 prosenttia.
Sitra: Lääkäreiden asenteet geenitutkimuksia kohtaan (Taloustutkimus 12/2013)Sitra / Hyvinvointi

A helmet of electrodes can help to distinguish between a cerebral infarction and a cerebral haemorrhage. Rapid diagnosis, even in the ambulance, has a strong impact on the patient’s prognosis. The sooner that treatment is initiated to dissolve a blockage, the better the results.

This document discusses new methods for mapping functionally important brain regions before neurosurgery using transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS). The BioMag Laboratory at Helsinki University Central Hospital developed nTMS mapping which can identify regions critical for speech, movement and understanding. nTMS involves stimulating the brain with magnetic pulses to locate regions and has been commercialized by spin-off company Nexstim. Precisely mapping these regions helps neurosurgeons plan surgery for tumors or epilepsy near speech or motor areas to minimize risks to patients.
The study used heart rate and sleep monitors over a week to track the stress levels of 36 busy city residents. It found that people experienced the highest stress in the evenings as they planned for the next day, rather than at work. Only physical activity levels corresponded to differences in individual stress - more active people's stress declined during the work day. The researchers hope to commercialize a tool to analyze these connections between physical data, stress, and behavior.
The document discusses a study analyzing heart rate data from over 2,000 days to research stress, recovery, and exercise. 318 subjects had their physiological measurements taken and answered questionnaires. Small monitors recorded subjects' heartbeats without disrupting daily life. Preliminary results found subjects recovered from stress but often forgot about exercise. Multi-disciplinary research projects provide opportunities to increase understanding of human well-being and make contributions with techniques for evaluating stress, recovery, and exercise.
A study compared the effects of conventional face-to-face therapy and therapy using new technologies on indicators of mental and physical well-being. 280 participants were divided into groups receiving face-to-face lifestyle intervention, online intervention, mobile intervention, or serving as a control. Preliminary results found all intervention forms benefited in reducing depression symptoms. Mobile and online therapies were as effective as interpersonal sessions in preventing depression. The findings show the value of technology-assisted therapy in delivering treatment anywhere and anytime.
Researchers in Finland have been studying the use of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) to diagnose Alzheimer's disease in early stages. The study found sensory gating, the brain's ability to filter out repetitive sensory inputs, is impaired in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. ERPs provide an objective, non-invasive way to test cognitive processes and sensory gating. The research was conducted on patients with mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer's, and a control group. The findings could help develop diagnostic solutions and may be applicable to existing medical technology.

A mobile application called Oiva has been developed by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the University of Jyväskylä to promote mental wellness and alleviate stress using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy techniques. A pilot study found the application improved quality of life and reduced stress for users. Oiva teaches skills through brief daily exercises on a smartphone to improve flexibility, motivation, and ability to make lifestyle changes. Follow up studies will test the application with workers experiencing stress and expectant parents.
The document discusses Finland's experience using existing population cohorts in health research. It provides examples of cohorts studying links between lifestyle factors like stress, sleep, exercise and diet on mental health. The SalWe Mind and Body Programme utilizes these cohorts in projects exploring these links. For example, one cohort showed stress increases unhealthy eating and weight gain. The research aims to help individuals improve lifestyle and prevent chronic diseases.
This document summarizes a study being conducted as part of Finland's Mind and Body research program. The study is investigating changes in brain function as stroke patients recover using novel brain imaging methods. Researchers from Aalto University and Helsinki University Central Hospital are collaborating with medical device company Elekta to study patients and develop new rehabilitation techniques. The results so far indicate that most changes in the brain occur within the first four weeks of recovery. The researchers hope to use these methods to develop more personalized rehabilitation programs and treatment comparisons to improve recovery outcomes for stroke patients.
A web-based counseling program was developed to provide lifestyle advice on diet and physical activity to motivate behavior change. The program gives brief information on these topics and encourages exercise and healthy eating habits. A randomized controlled trial found that participants who used the program lost weight after 3-6 months. Researchers are analyzing which advice was most effective to design an advanced version of the program focused on motivating lifestyle changes.
Whey protein found in milk has high nutritional value and contains many essential amino acids. Valio is studying whey protein's effects on weight management, sleep, and stress. Whey protein is absorbed quickly by the body and may help regulate mood, appetite, and weight through neurotransmitters like tryptophan. Valio aims to develop functional foods using whey protein to complement their existing portfolio of probiotic and lactose-free products.
Researchers are searching for new biomarkers to better diagnose intestinal inflammations like celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. The research involves universities in Tampere and Helsinki along with commercial partners. They aim to find biomarker combinations in the blood and feces that can determine the type and severity of intestinal inflammation. Promising results include optimizing an in-vitro gluten challenge test and exploring genetic risk factors for rare celiac disease cases. The goal is to develop new diagnostic tests, especially for point-of-care use in monitoring disease progression.

Poikkeuksellista tietoa stressin ilmenemisestä – uusi lähestymistapa yhdisti yhteiskuntatieteilijät ja terveystutkimuksen

SalWen Mielen ja kehon eliksiirit -ohjelmassa tutkittiin tutkittiin stressin ja palautumisen esiintymistä
ihmisten arjessa hyödyntämällä suomalaisen Firstbeatin sykeanalyysilaitteistoa. Tutkimuksessa
selvitettiin ryhmän kokemaa stressiä, ei yksittäisen henkilön.
”Tutkimuksessa oli mukana 36 kiireistä kaupunkilaista.
Osa ryhmästä edusti omasta terveydestään kiinnostuneita ja toinen osa niitä, jotka eivät välitä terveyteensä
liittyvistä asioista. Tutkittavia seurattiin runsaan viikon
ajan Firstbeatin sykeanalyysilaitteistolla, öisin heillä
olivat Vivagon unimittarit käytössä. Erilaisia tietoja
kyseltiin myös Android-puhelimella, lisäksi seurantaa
tehtiin GPS-paikantimilla”, kertoo tutkimusprofessori

tieteilijä Veera Mustonen. Tutkimukseen osallistuivat
myös Firstbeat Technologies Oy, Valio Oy, Vivago Oy
ja VTT.
”Tuloksien mukaan työelämässä kiireiset ihmiset eivät
stressaantuneetkaan työssään, vaan sen ulkopuolella.
Stressipiikit kello 8 aamulla, kello 15 iltapäivällä ja
kaikkein korkeimmat illalla kello 20 viittaavat siihen,
muutosta.”
Mika Pantzar arvioi, että 5–10 vuoden kuluessa tällainen mittauksiin perustuva lähestymistapa on yhteiskuntatieteissä arkipäivää, kun tutkitaan stressin,
rahan käytön ja terveyden välisiä suhteita.

Yhteiskuntatieteilijöillä on tendenssinä työskennellä
