3. Podcasting in Education
What is Podcasting?
quot;Podcasting is a term used to describe a collection of technologies for
automatically distributing audio and video programs over the internet
...Podcasting enables independent producers to create self-published,
syndicated quot;radio shows,quot; and gives broadcast radio or television programs
a new distribution method.
Any digital audio player or computer with audio-playing software can play
podcasts....The term quot;podcastquot;, however, still refers largely to audio content
distribution.
A podcast is not the same as a webcast, which normally refers to a show
distributed by streaming media.quot;

4. Proof Podcasting is Beneficial!
This website offers pieces of reviews of podcasting and it’s beneficial effects
in education.
The Seattle Times Education Teachers see iPods as educational tool
Quote from the article:
Using little more than an iPod and a school computer, Gagliolo and her
students have been making podcasts — online radio shows that can be
downloaded to an iPod or other portable MP3 player. Avidly discussing their
favorite iPod colors and models while they made recordings of their poems
and book reports the other day, the fifth-graders bubbled with ideas for future
subjects.
quot;We could read parts of books, to show why we like them. We could do
interviews. If there's a field trip, we could make a recording of it and post it,quot;
said Mohamed El-Sayed, 10. quot;Kids anywhere will like to hear about us.quot;
5. I think this website is great because it offers many different
views on what podcasting is and how it can be used in the
classroom. This site also offers many ways in which to
prove podcasting is effective.
This website hosts a pod cast known as AceKids. This is a
podcast created as a class project and is done in an elementary
class. Click the icon below to hear AceKids’s first broadcast.

6. Learning in Hand: Podcasting
Podcasting can be utilized while not only in the
classroom, but while on many handheld devices such as
PDA’s, cell phones, ipods, and netbooks.
Creating podcasts has many educational benefits.
Students are able to create a product to share with a
potentially world-wide audience. Their podcast can be
listed in iTunes, right along with podcasts from the
Discovery Channel and Disney. Knowing that there will
be a real life audience gives students purpose and
motivation to create a spectacular product. The process
of putting together an audio recording is extremely
valuable and is certainly a cross-curricular experience

David Baugh, an ICT advisory teacher for Denbighshire county
council, gives an excellent explanation as to why podcasting is so
beneficial:
“First, you're publishing to a potentially vast audience and using
technology that gives you feedback. Podcasting is not a one-off - it's
a series of episodes and there's a great incentive to carry on.
quot;Second, it's a great way of distributing learning materials, which can
include sound, images and video. It's publishing with a purpose. With
a VLE [virtual learning environment], you have to encourage people
to visit it, but podcasting is a push technology - once people have
subscribed, they get the stuff sent to them.
quot;Third, it's a great communication tool. Think of the number of school
newsletters that never get read. Podcasting can be a great way to
communicate with parents.quot;
10. Is Podcasting Successful?
Podcasting has proven to be successful but has a
long road ahead as it continues to grow and reach
more schools.
This website urges teachers to try out podcasting in
their own classroom, because that is the best way to
gauge the effectiveness of this emerging technology.
