The temperature in Dhaka city has risen 2 degrees centigrade over the past century, more than the average 0.6 degree rise in Bangladesh, due to unplanned urbanization. Areas within Dhaka vary in temperature depending on factors like motor vehicle traffic and air conditioner use. The Poribesh Bachao Andolan environmental group made suggestions including hourly temperature updates from the weather department to address the rising temperatures caused by the nearly 1 million registered vehicles in Dhaka.

The temperature of Dhaka city continues to rise due mainly to an unplanned urbanization, the
Poribesh Bachao Andolan (POBA) said on Tuesday at a press conference.
Citing the Met office data, the POBA said although the average temperature in Bangladesh
increased by 0.6 degree centigrade during the last century, the temperature in Dhaka city rose by
2.0 degree centigrade alone.
Besides, the temperature in Dhaka city varies from one area to another like Paltan, Gulistan, New
Market and Farmgate due to the unplanned urbanization and presence of motor vehicles and
other electronic compliances like air-conditioner, said the POBA.
It mentioned that around 9, 64,394 motor vehicles were registered in Dhaka until February 2016.
Considering the overall situation, the POBA made an eight-point suggestion, including
monitoring the city temperatures and updating the dwellers about the same every hour by the
department of weather.

Lenin Chowdhury, joint general secretary of POBA, Md Selim, co-secretary of POBA, Engr.
Tofaiel Ahmed, co-secretary of POBA, Architect Shahin Aziz and Engr. Abdus Sattar, among
others, were present at the press briefing held at its city office.
