The unexplored ‘AGOR’ industry can earn Tk 1.0 billion foreign exchange per annum, experts
claimed.
The call was made in the inauguration of the workshop titled ‘Cultivation of Agor and
development of the industry in Bangladesh’ arranged jointly by Bangladesh Forest Research
Institute (BFRI) and Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) held at the city’s CIRDAP
auditorium on Wednesday.
Dr Kamal Uddin, secretary of MOEF, Dr. Shahin Akhter, director of BFRI, Dr Abdur Rahman,
researcher of BFRI, farmers, entrepreneurs and senior officials of MOEF, Amit Kumar Baul,
additional secretary of MOEF, Md Younus Ali, chief forest conserver of MOEF, Dr Khurshid
Akhter, chief research officer of BFRI, among others, were present in the workshop, said a press
release.
Citing the unlimited possibility of ‘AGOR’ cultivation in Bangladesh Dr Kamal Uddin said, By
developing the‘AGOR’ industry in Bangladesh Tk 1.0 billion foreign exchange per annum could
be earned. The instruction was given to the department of the forest and the forest research
institute to help the AGOR farmers and encourage the industry entrepreneurs of Bangladesh
during the workshop.
Moreover, related ministries and departments would have to take collaborative action plan to
simplify of the export process of ‘Agor’ and thus help to develop the industry, he added.
A total of seven research papers presented on forestation of Agor trees using contemporary
technologies, extract oil from Agor woods and produce timber from Agor trees, the press release
added.
