2. The Beginning
Macadamia were introduced into China by Mr. Graham Todd,
Mr. John Wilkie and Mr. Cheng Hung Kay in 1981. They were
planted at The Sub Tropical Research Institute at Zhang Jiang.
In the beginning the trees grew well but the area was unsuitable
because of Typhoons – all the original trees have now been
killed by Typhoons.
3. Macadamia moved to Guangxi
Severe typhoon damage in Guangdong Province -
Macadamia development moved to Guangxi Province
by State Farms Bureau.
Propagation of trees was commenced and two large farms
were developed.
Temperatures in Guangxi not ideal and technology poor,
only one farm now remains. This farm is now being
expanded to 100,000 Trees with new technology.
4. Macadamia move to Yunnan Province
• I started working with Macadamia in Yunnan in 1992
with Yunnan Cereals Oils and Foodstuffs Import and
Export Corporation.
• It was very difficult for a young lady to travel long
distances and work in very remote and mountainous
areas.
• We tested many varieties in many different areas.
• A farm was planted in Banna 1995 with varieties from
Guangxi and Guangdong.

7. The results of our work.
Our work proved Macadamia grows well in Yunnan.
Good yield depends on elevation, rainfall and soil
type. But, the correct technology is very important.
We introduced more varieties.
Some varieties much better than other varieties.
Yunnan Tropical Institute developed a map of the
best areas in Yunnan for macadamia.
In 1997 the Institute estimated at least 4.6 Million
Hectares are suitable for Macadamias in Yunnan as
per the following map.
9. The Present Situation
Macadamia Expansion
Because of our success with Macadamia in the beginning,
the Yunnan Government decided to expand large
areas of Macadamia in the year 2000 five year plan.
In the five year plan of 2000 the Chinese Central
Government and the Yunnan Government decided to
expand Tree Nut Crops such as Walnut, Macadamia,
Pecan, etc. in China.
10. In 2002 Chairman Yang led a Yunnan Provincial Government
Delegation on a study tour of macadamia in Australia.
In 2002 Chairman Yang appointed Mr. John Wilkie as
Consultant to Yunnan Government on Macadamia
Production.
In 2008 Mr. Wilkie awarded Gold Friendship Medal by China
Government in Great Hall of the People for his work with
Macadamia in China .
11. In 2003 we started Yunnan Macadamia
Development Company Limited and I was
appointed General Manager. and Mr. John
Wilkie was appointed as our Technical
